In the article “A Blight on the Nation: Slavery in Today's America” by Ron Soodalter, the contents outline that the common concept of slavery not existing is, in fact, fictitious. Soodalter highlights, that to most Americans’ common knowledge, that centuries ago the South had slaves, and the North fought a war for the liberation of all slaves. At the end of the Civil War, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed all the slaves in the South, and then later the 13th amendment fully abolished slavery and enforced servitude throughout the United States. However, as we kept our blind eyes turned, slavery has been allowed to blossom out of control, regardless of its illegality around the world. Soodalter states, “With an estimated 27 million people…

Slavery started out as a small minor issue, but it grew into something huge. It was such a big deal that some colonies would even agree to independence (everyone but Franklin, Jefferson, Adams, Hancock, and Thompson walked out on signing the Declaration of Independence) because they couldn 't keep their slaves. Majority of the states/colonies would rather stay under a cruel British Monarch than to give up their slaves. The African workers that were brought here as indentured servants ended up becoming…

Slaves were subjected to harsh conditions, working long work days in extreme heat in horrible working conditions. They were used to grow and harvest tobacco, sugar, and rice on plantations. Slavery was implemented by the men and women of American colonization to take over the harvesting process of crops in the South, but caused the majority of American citizens to refocus their moral compass and choose whether or not to support this peculiar institution. By the eighteenth century, “slavery became more entrenched” (Foner, 135) in North America. In all regions, people depended on slavery in order to make an income and put food on the table. Although New England and other middle colonies did not condone plantation slavery, the colonies still made profit from African slaves by shipping them to areas such as South Carolina, Georgia, and the Caribbean, or by using slaves for other types of labor. These colonies gave slaves (usually personal servants or artisan shop workers) some rights that no slave ever experienced in southern colonies: marriage, letting family inherit land, and testifying against whites. In South Carolina, slaves were either responsible for farming on rice and indigo plantations,…
