She was a teenager or a young woman who still wanted to play with her handmade dolls that she herself made with corn leaves and other wild things. Patsey was the best worker in the plantation of Mr. Epps, and she was easily able to surpass the amount of cotton that the other workers collected. She was the “queen of the fields,” as Mr. Epps would say. She was remarkably the favorite for Mr. Epps, and he made it noticeable to his slaves and wife. It was the fact that she could give him more money, her young age, and appearance that attracted Mr. Epps the most and it was the same characteristic that caused her a lot of problems with Mrs. Epps. On one hand, Patsey was being physically violated by her master whenever he felt like it; and on the other hand, she was being psychology abused by his master’s mistress.
