Sleep Homeostasis
Homeostasis, in general, the sleep-wake cycle is regulated by two separate biological mechanisms in the body which interact together and balance each other. Studies say that high levels of adenosine leads to sleepiness. According to the two process model of sleep regulation the timing and structure of sleep are determined by the interaction of a homeostatic and a circadian process. The original qualitative model was elaborated to quantitative versions that included the ultradian dynamics of sleep in relation to the non rem-rem sleep cycle. The time course of eeg slow wave activity is the major marker of non rem sleep homeostasis as well as daytime alertness were simulated successfully for a considerable number of experimental protocols. The development of the electroencephalograph led to dramatic increases in what is known about sleep. When electrodes are attached to the face and scalp of sleepers, different patterns are produced on the graphic record called the electroencephalogram or EEG. The patterns vary in frequency and amplitude of the waves shown on the EEG. These waves reflect patterns of brain activity. It was discovered that the patterns on the EEG change throughout the night to correspond to various stages of sleep.…

Based on my own personal experience, I agree with this article. I think that sleep deprivation poses a public health issue. Not getting enough sleep affects our grades, and how well we do in school. Along with some physical disadvantages, there are some psychological as well. In the article, it said, “...neural remodeling is important for learning and memory.” The quiet time can be good for strengthening or weakening certain neurons. Sleep is a significant thing for students to get so that they are mentally and physically ready to accomplish all of the hard tasks for the next day. I gathered some details from an article that stated, “There have been many studies proving that starting school later on in the day will promote students learning…

I investigate students attaining higher grades on exams when they receive proper sleep. I discuss 3 possible hypotheses for the reason of this occurrence: 1) more sleep contributes to greater capability in remembering, 2) rest is necessary for the brain to function at its prime, 3) staying awake and studying the night before leaves you with no energy during the actual exam. I will test hypothesis 2, which will include individuals to have 8 hours or more of sleep or less than 8 to no sleep at all and using EEG method to visualize the brains activity in relation to the amount of sleep and observing the scores received on exams. I would expect that students with at least 8 hours of sleep will receive better marks than those who get little to no sleep.…

These stages are known as slow-wave, or delta, sleep. If woken up, you may feel disoriented for a while. REM sleep is described as sleep where rapid eye movement occurs. It is also known as “active sleep.” It is during REM sleep that we being to dream. On average a person can have 3 to 5 periods of REM sleep per night.
