Living Conditions Third world countries have extremely different living conditions as compared to a first world country. There is a higher crime rate in these areas due to the lack government provisions. Kids are left stranded and unprotected when their parents leave or are taken from them. Living conditions are extremely poor in the Mumbai slums and from this brings out a lot of health and social issues. There are great number of riots and social disputes that occur on almost a daily bases. “Slumdog Millionare” gave many examples of all of the mentioned occurrences in third world countries around the globe. There are very high instances of crime in these areas of the world and this is mostly due to the lack of a governing presence in maintaining the crime rate low. Without the necessary funding, the government cannot provide adequate policing powers for all of the residents of the country. This causes higher instances of crime, because there is no punishment for the crimes that have been committed. In the movie, riots run rampant and end up killing the main character’s, Jamal, mother. No one was held accountable and there aren’t any child protective services for this region of the world, so the oldest brother, Salim, who is a child himself, is left to take care of Jamal. The conditions in which the residents of the slums of Mumbai live in would shock the rest of the first world countries. Barely scrapping by is the way of these people, even if they have jobs. They survive on the bare minimum and consistently have to sacrifice just in order to have food, water, and shelter. Due to these living conditions, children get “lost” and have to beg and steal in order to survive. In the movie, Jamal and his brother live wherever they can after their mother dies from the riots.
