Slumdog Millionaire What does the title mean? how does the title and contrasts within it provide a symbolic summary of the movie? Just the title "Slumdog Millionaire" holds significant signs as to what the core messages of this production are. The title signifies the capability of ANYONE to achieve what they strive for no matter what their background is. It is an exemplary symbolic summary of how the poorest of the poor gain valuable experience to achieve what nobody believes in. His journey is viewed as an impossible one by many because he is simply a "slumdog".
What does it mean that all Jamal desires is just out of reach? To say that all of Jamal's desires are just out of reach is an accurate statement, but I feel that it would be better to say that they are within sight. Because his goals are something he can see, but has to strive for. His drive for and desire to get the autograph, to know the answers, etc, are what allow him to achieve them. He has a wealth of personal experiences to apply towards everything, and because nobody believes that, he is labelled a cheater.
How do their choices affect their respective paths in life or "destinies"? The early lives of Jamal and Salim are an interesting topic. One tries to save the other's spirit, while he in turn, saves the other's physical self. An example of this behavior is when Salim knows that Jamal's eyes will be taken out, so he grants an opportunity to escape. And no matter how much pain Salim brings him, Jamal is always willing to forgive, and open the door to him. No matter what came between the two, they always ended up relying on one another to survive.
Is ethical decision making possible when one must make choices based on survival? Do seemingly "bad" choices make a person bad? I feel that when decision making is based upon survival ethics can be put down until immediate danger is removed. Bad choices given the right situation are acceptable
