Smart Materials In Architecture
Abstract:
Today, Buildings are becoming more productive than just a place to have certain function or purpose; they are becoming like machines that can create an intelligent environment. In the last few decades, scientists has started to look for a new technology in materials which they called it “smart materials “that can provide the building and environment with new developments and technologies that would move the architecture to higher level of technology and provide solutions for the existing and continuing problems. This paper will provide an overview of the exact understanding of smart materials, types and characteristics, the proposed smart products and the applications of the available ones in the new technology buildings.

Introduction
The process of developing materials has been generating throughout history, which creates new civilizations that reaches us to where we are at this time. For instance, the incentive to search for new materials and develop them to get better properties such as steel made it possible to build high rise buildings that Exceed 100 meters in height. Furthermore, the existence of thin-shell concrete enabled architects and designers to create today’s fabulous facades.

While Axel Ritter further explains in his book “smart materials in architecture, interior architecture and Design” that smart materials have “properties which can change and are able to reversibly change their shape or color in response to physical and/or chemical influences”. Various definitions can lead to one understanding from which we can derive a definition of smart materials.
