Smiley Smile is the twelfth studio album by the American rock band the Beach Boys. It was released on September 18, 1967 and managed to reach number nine on the UK record charts. In the US however, it was not perceived as well and only managed to reach spot forty-one. The CD comes off weak compared to the album Smile, which was a much more well-constructed LP that was never released by the Beach Boys. Smiley Smile took a lot of its inspiration from Smile, the most notable change being that four pre-existing songs from smile were taken to Smiley smile with significantly scaled down arrangements. This however does not make Smiley Smile a bad CD. There are many elements to Smiley Smile that made it an album that stood out for its time such as its Lo-fi…

So I've been doing this experiment were I've been smiling to more people and being more friendly towards people since I am a somewhat shy person around strangers. So what I did on my first day of my mini experiment was just start smiling more and then by being kind of stalker like I observed their behavior. the funny thing was that most people that smiled back seemed to just have a better day. The funny thing is since I haven't really told anyone about my little expiremnet one of my friends noticed that I was smiling more often. Then I realized that I was generally happier since I started this expiremnet because now I talk more to people and am not as…
In “How Women Smile”, Anna Cunningham informs her readers that a women smiling is largely forced by societal pressure. A smile starts out involuntarily as babies, used to make a connection and please another person, smiling for pleasure comes later (173). Cunningham speaks of this pressure from a person stance as well as observation, family members and acquaintances expect smiles so often that they will question you if you are not smiling. Women smile to hide pain, to alleviate others discomfort, to show deference to others. They have been steered into believing this is the way they need to look or behave through decades of advertising, television shows, literature and even paintings.…

The second experiment I conducted I was much simpler. I simply smiled at people anywhere, supermarket, school, bank etc... Some smiled back some simply ignored me. One guy asked me for my phone number because he thought I was flirting with him.…
Facial expressions are a form of demonstrative communication. Communicating includes different facial expressions, tone of voice, or body language to deliver the message. A smile is an example of a positive facial expression, and a frown will be viewed in a more negative manner. Some interpret a grin as arrogance, which obviously would have a negative effect. The audience could take this in the wrong manner and create an isolated situation. Depending on the subject that is being discussed it is up to the lecturer to bring out the right facial expressions. If the subject relies on a more serious matter, the lecturer should not frown but instead maintain a serious face to get the point across. If there is a sense of comedy in the discussion or presentation, the lecturer needs to maintain some laughter as well as smiling during the presentation.…
Yes a smile is a universal nonverbal form of communication. A smile is a facial expression that shows happiness. People can smile for several reasons such as happiness, excitement, if something is funny, or even out of embarrassment. For the most part across the globe, smiling is a natural reaction to a happy feeling. However, in some cultures babies are taught to smile at strangers, while other babies are taught to smile only in certain circumstances (Lustig & Koester, 2010). Culture is taught at an early stage such as teaching babies of when to smile. Cultures should remember this when speaking to others from different cultures. Although, here in America we smile at everyone as a courtesy, it doesn’t mean a woman from another culture is being mean if she doesn’t smile back. It could be that in her culture woman do not smile to strangers. The answer to the question is yes it is universal and communicates a form of happiness, but we still need to be mindful of other cultures and their non-verbal communication.…
“Why Woman Smile” is a persuasive essay written by Amy Cunningham, an essay that explores the theme of gender differences in our society, specifically the difference between the frequency that women smile compared to men. She believes the frequency of a woman’s smile has more to do with the social pressure put on her to smile than it does her actual state of happiness. Cunningham uses historical, biological and cultural examples as evidence to support her opinion that these types of influences are to blame for the persistent smiling of women. Women smile “promiscuously” and often insincerely and the tradition of this behavior is heavily influence by the combination of social pressures in society and human biology. Women need to speak up and start fighting their instinct to smile constantly and say what’s really on their mind.…
McMahon writes about Americans and their pursuit to be happy. The holiday season start off with Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year. Thomas Carlyle once said, “ ‘Happiness our being’s end and aim’ is at bottom, if we will count well, not yet two centuries old in the world” (960). For instance, suffering at one time was our natural state due to religious beliefs, however, this is not the reality of it. God put us on earth to be happy. Carlyle believed the mankind is as miserable today has it has ever been and that pure happiness is an impossibility. Essentially, if we were truly happy why are there large numbers of book that tell us how to obtain happiness? Kahneman and Layard have agrued for good feelings and national…
In today’s society, women have natural smiles, but it's questioned as to why. The essay, “Why Women Smile,” wrote by Amy Cunningham as she elaborated her view of associating women with how they smile. I, personally, enjoyed this essay because I was able to put myself in Amy Cunningham’s shoes as she discussed her viewpoint, as well as the research she found. Cunningham’s views are similar to mine, which helped me relate to the essay very much.…
I agree with you that staring or smiling at strangers here in America may be considered rude or malicious by most foreigners. When I got here in America, I often startled and felt uncomfortable that people here or strangers would greet me and smile at me in public. I totally find that very strange because I believe in most Asian cultures, smiling at strangers in public may show affection or disguise true feelings. However, now that I have already adjusted to the American lifestyle, greeting or smiling at strangers is not an issue to me at all; yet, I am very cautious with whom I smile at.…
It is in my best interest to never lose any reason to not smile. I try to find reasons to smile everywhere and every day, whether the reason involves weather, my job, friends, or smaller things like I woke up early for the day. So I make reasons to be optimistic, to start the day content and positive. I know that it’s important for me to stay positive and find things to be happy about.…

The fear of going on my mission trip to Honduras was building up inside of me. I had spent the past three months brushing up on my Spanish so that when we arrived in Honduras, I would feel confident when I was speaking to the Natives. However, that confidence was now destroyed as my Pastor dropped the bomb that we were changing destinations to a NON-Spanish speaking country.…
