If you happen to enjoy a cigarette, you are the potential target of violent antismokers and overzealous public enforcers determined to force their beliefs on the rest of society.…
The Center for disease Control reports that cigarette smoke causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. This is about one in five deaths. The center adds that smoking causes more deaths every year than Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, and firearm- related incidents. With this being a known fact there are still smokers in today’s world. The question that should be asked is why do people smoke cigarettes despite their proven dangers? Smoking cannot only damage or bring harm to every organ in the human body, but it can cause countless diseases. If people just stopped smoking altogether, they would decrease the risk of smoke-related diseases and most importantly…
Over time, cigarettes and smoking have developed a bad reputation. People don’t understand that the real problem is not the negative sides of smoking, but the people who refuse to smoke. These people are an irritation, and want to spoil your fun. In fact, smoking can be very beneficial to society; the positives of smoking clearly outweigh the negatives. It is important for the world to increase smoking habits because of the positives like changed physical features, a shortened lifespan, and a new social image.…
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, “Strategies”. It causes serious illness among an estimated 8.6 million persons, it cost $167 billion dollars, in annual health-related losses, and it kills approximately 438,000 people each year. Worldwide, smoking kills about 5 million a year, “Frieden and Blackman”. Through these statistics, you think people would realize that smoking is not something that should be messed with. Most of the reasons why smokers keep smoking is…
Every smoker has their own excuse. For some, inhaling or consuming tobacco products is the healthiest form of indulgence. From personal experience, nicotine became an unhealthy form of stress relief. A way I could calm my nerves during the stressful hours of the school day, but there have been many changes. I have a shortness of breath from performing a simple task. I also have developed a cough along with a loss of vivid smells. If there is one thing I can say this is definitely something I would like to move away from, and I encourage any smoker or tobacco user to leave the comfort zone and save your well being. Along with that there are still consumers could care less, until it starts affecting responsibilities such as bills, payments, transportation. Studies have shown “A 10% increase in price has been estimated to reduce overall cigarette consumption by 3-5%” (CDC). Centers of Disease and Control have also visited that the price increase…
Smoking is a major issue because it's the main source of death on the planet higher than infectious disease, greater then obesity, greater than guns (Share Care). Each year tobacco is killing more than 6 million people around the world (World Health Organization). Three of the primary reasons youngsters smoke to look experienced, to resemble their companions, and to analyze (From the First to the Last Ash: The History, Economics and Hazards of Tobacco). Smokers are not killing themselves by doing it, but they are killing other people by increasing their risk of lung cancer and heart disease if people are exposed to other people smoking for long periods of time. For example, lung cancer increased by about 20-30% in human being's who regularly…
Smokers and non-smokers have many differences, and very few similarities. I am one of those people who have been subject to addiction and got into the habit of smoking even though I do realize that us smokers are looked down upon by many people. Many restaurants and public places have become non-smoking, which prevents smokers from going certain places. Most people who smoke realize the harmful affects, but addiction is too strong to overcome that most of the time. For me I don't think it's as much the addiction, but how cigarettes help me relax and relieve stress.…
2. Although smokers are the one’s directly inhaling the smoke from their cigarettes, they put everyone’s life in jeopardy. Those around them are not given the choice as to whether they will inhale the toxic air. With the increasing evidence of the dangers of smoking and second-hand smoke, there is no longer a place for smoking in society.…
In recent years the prohibition of smoking in or on college campuses, places of business, and healthcare facilities has increased dramatically. Some employers are going as far as firing people for smoking even in their own cars or simply smelling like smoke. More and more non-smokers and healthcare professionals have began calling for a ban on the production and sale of cigarettes. I believe outlawing the production and sale of cigarettes may cause more problems than it would help solve. Three important points that are typically pushed aside are: smoking is a choice banning it completely takes away your personal freedom of choice; Outlawing cigarettes may not fully dissolve the problem people will find a way to do it regardless; Banning cigarette sales may have a greater negative impact on our already struggling economy.…
Smoking is a habit forming and in many instances very hard to stop once started. As the world around grows and increases in knowledge it is becoming more evident that smoking is dangerous not just to the smoker, but the people around them as well. There are many reasons that one may start the habit of smoking but are unaware of just how much the body becomes dependent on it in regard to feeling normal. Like any other habit forming drug the body and mind see the nicotine in cigarettes as a need rather than a want.…
The loss of my grandmother was the saddest day of my life. My grandmother never smoked a cigarette in her life. She died of heart disease in 1997. Ironically the heart disease was diagnosed as a result of secondhand smoke. My grandparents were married for over fifty years. Even now I still can hear my grandmother saying “Robert you need to put those cigarettes down before they kill you.” Robert, my grandfather, was a smoker for sixty years. My grandfather would answer back “Well we have to die from something.” After my grandmother died, my grandfather lived another twelve years and he died of a heart attack. Every smoker understands that smoking is harmful to their health. Do nonsmokers know the hazardous of secondhand smoke? The loss of my grandmother elevated my interest in the effects of secondhand smoke; which have become an epidemic in the United States. A study from the surgeon general says 126 million nonsmoking Americans are exposed to secondhand smoke each year (Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, 2006, para 2). More than 49,000 nonsmokers die each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008, para 3).…
In the early years smoking in the United States was a very common occurrence. Adults were smoking anywhere they pleased. It was normal to see a couple puffing on a cigarette in the local grocery store, on the bus to work, or even in their office cubical. Back then there were no studies shown that smoking cased health problems or death. The people did not see cigarettes as a harmful thing. It was not until the late 1960’s that the world started realizing smoking was indeed harmful. Unfortunately, at first the Public Health Services rejected the idea of further tobacco related actions, such as placing warning labels on cigarettes, or creating educational…
Can you smell that? That’s the smell of fresh air. Now can you smell what I smell? It’s the smell of Cigarettes, which is the smell of millions and millions of epithelial cells being burned to crisp and coated with deposits of tar, while introducing 4000 toxins to the rest of your body. People don’t understand how catastrophic the effects of smoking can be, Financially, Physically and Mentally (Parallelism). Diseases like Asthma, Lung Cancer, and or even death… They are high prices to pay for a small piece of tar, don’t you think? (Rhetorical Question) About 15 billion, yeah that’s right 15 BILLION cigarettes are sold daily or 10 MILLION per minute. Can you imagine how repulsive the smell of 15…
For those of us who are non-smokers, it is disturbing to find out that even though you do not smoke, you can still get diseases that are caused from smoking; this is thanks to second hand smoke. As a non-smoker, when one breathes in second hand smoke they take in nicotine and other toxic chemicals just like a smoker does. The more secondhand smoke that a person is exposed to the level of harmful chemicals in their body is also very high. Second hand smoke is a very big problem recently. Stores, restaurants, and other public places are beginning to ban smoking inside and ask that if someone wants to smoke they must step outside so many feet from the building. There are four major places where smoking is a very big problem: at work, in public place, at home,…
Smoking Kills Lately a problem has occurred with smoking. The number of people who smoke has dramatically risen over the past few years. This is a huge problem because smoking causes big health risks that leads to sickness or worst, death, smokers can also harm the people around them and the environment that is surrounding them. Some people may fight their inner self trying to quit this horrible habit, but obviously they would always fail because after that one try of cigarette it will take whole control of their poor lives and kill them slowly everyday without them realizing it. The sad thing here is that there is a lot of people and specially in media who are supporting smoking and such stuff as drugs and alcohol. One big reason that leads people to smoking is so they can pump up their self esteem and self confidence. Yet another reason why people smoke is to avoid weight gain.…
