Do you want to live longer? Smoking is responsible for a large number of deaths every year across the world. Cigarette smoking has been identified as the number one preventable death in the world. Smoking kills slowly. One cigarette contains about 4000 chemicals, 51 of which are carcinogenic, meaning the chemicals cause cancer. Smoking has many negative effects; it becomes addictive, it harms the body, and causes personal problems.
Cigarettes contain many toxic chemicals that damage one’s health. However, it is the intake of nicotine that makes smoking so addictive. Nicotine is a drug, a stimulant, which stimulates the brain activating the “pleasure centers”. Smokers quickly build a tolerance to nicotine and want more in order to experience the same results. As the effects of nicotine wear off, a smoker will experience increasing discomfort. That’s when the body reacts because it needs more nicotine. The body becomes physiologically dependent on the nicotine in cigarettes and psychologically accustomed to the habit that quitting becomes an extreme challenge.
Smoking has many negative effects on the body. When inhaling smoke, tar sticks to the lungs and blackens them. Carbon monoxide chemical in cigarettes is a very poisonous gas also found in the exhaust of cars; this interferes with the respiratory system and circulatory system. This causes the human body to have difficulties breathing. Work performance and productivity decreases. The body feels tired and slower due to lack of oxygen because of the alveoli being covered with tar. Smoking is known to make teeth yellow due to the nicotine; a strong poisonous drug, which main ingredient is found in insecticides or bug sprays. Smoking also has a harmful effect on pregnant women. Smoking affects the baby’s brain development and birth weight, and increase the probably of miscarriage and premature birth. Children of smokers are more likely to suffer from serious respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
Smoking may cause tension between friend and family relationships. Maybe a friend don’t like being around smoke and may cause to lose a friendship. A smoker could end up at hospital due to the negative effects and paying the bills could cause tension in the family. If a teenager’s mother finds out her son/daughter was smoking, would probably be upset and disappointed. Also, finding a relationship may be hard since many people don’t feel attracted to some one who smokes, because of the uncomfortable odor, the yellow teeth or because of the negative effect of second hand smoke. There’s a lot of pressure in today’s society. Some people think smoking is cool, but it’s not. Smoking is addictive and very hard to quit once you start. Smoking kills slowly, it causes cancer; it affects the respiratory system, making it harder to breath. Smoking may also ruin relationships, such as friends and family. Worldwide, smoking causes more than 5 million deaths per year. Do you want to be one of 5 million?

Withdrawal from nicotine has two parts, which are the physical and the mental. The physical symptoms are annoying but are not life-threatening. Nicotine replacement and other medicines can help reduce many of these physical symptoms. Most smokers find that the biggest challenge is the mental part of quitting. If a smoker has been smoking for any length of time, smoking has become linked with nearly everything he/she does, such as waking up in the morning, eating, reading, watching television, and drinking coffee. This is why, even if a smoker is using a nicotine replacement, he/she may still have strong urges to…

What makes cigarettes so addictive? Well, I’m glad to tell you that’s why I am here today to explain and teach you about for the first half of this presentation. Cigarettes contain over 599 additives; one of those being Nicotine. Nicotine, also known in our chemistry world as 3-[(2S)-1-methylpyrrolidin-2-yl]pyridine – but you don’t have to concern yourself with that name – is the major additive in cigarettes responsible for their addictive qualities. Now if I say so myself, Nicotine is good at its job considering that there is typically only 1mg of Nicotine absorbed into the body per cigarette. Now Nicotine is a dangerous addicting drug because it has both psychological and physical addicting qualities, similar to heroin and cocaine, which makes the addiction that much harder to…

It has an important part in regulating mood and pleasure, both serving as a trigger for the synthesis of adrenaline and noradrenaline and acting as a neurotransmitter. When nicotine goes to the brain, it produces a rush of dopamine into the bloodstream, causing the user to become more relaxed and calm. In this respect, nicotine's chemical action is very similar to such other drugs as cocaine, amphetamines ,and morphine. In effect, each time a smokeless tobacco user puts a pinch of tobacco in his or her mouth or inhales some powder, he or she gets a powerfully reinforcing and rewarding chemical message from the brain that, over a short period of time, will cause physical and emotional dependence on tobacco. However, because the body quickly becomes used to nicotine through a process called "tolerance," users experience a gradual rise in the amount of tobacco they need to get the same physiological…
