Smoking is Harmful!
Speech Title: ______Don’t Smoke! _________________________

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience that smoking is harmful in many ways and to try and persuade them not to do it.

Central Idea: Smoking is very harmful to the body and can cause many diseases, so people should reconsider it before they do it.

Introduction
Attention: Hey everyone, my name’s Katie Jakubec, and today I’m going to be talking a little bit about why you shouldn’t smoke. I think pretty much everyone’s already heard about how bad smoking is for you but I don’t think people really take all of it into consideration before they do it.

Preview:(I.II.&III below) Today I want to give some examples of why people start smoking and then give some reasons why they shouldn’t and how they could stop.

Transition: First, why do people even start to smoke?

Body
I. Why do people start to smoke?
A. Peer Pressure
B. Stress
C. To lose weight
D. To pass the time.

II. Smoking is harmful in many ways:
A. Addictive (contains nicotine)

B. Causes disease (show picture)
1. Lung cancer

2. Heart Disease etc.

C. Produces thousands of harmful chemicals (show picture)

D.It’s expensive!

E. It affects the health of those around you.
1. Second-hand smoking

III. How can you stop?
A. Gain support from others.
B. Write the reasons why you should stop on a piece of paper.
C. Chew gum.
D. Replace it with other nicotine products.
E. (show picture of before/after lungs after smoker quit)

Cue Conclusion: With all that being said…_______________________________________
Conclusion

Summary: If you’ve never smoked before then I would strongly encourage you not to and if you are currently a smoker then please think of all the bad ways it is affecting your health. Try and forget all the reasons of why you started and try focusing on the reasons of why you should quit and how you could.

Final Statement: Smoking is not worth the risk and I would strongly encourage you to reconsider it if you are ever wanting to. Thank you
