Did you know that smoking is one of the most preventable causes for death in society? Each year an estimate total of 430,000 deaths are reported due to smoking. That is more than any other deaths in the world combined. This is why you must quit smoking for good. If you quit smoking, you will live a healthy life. Breaking the habit of smoking is the most important thing on your mind right now because it is part of taking care of your health, but it is also part of taking care of your family. I will cover the basic problems of smoking, the reasons why smoking affects others just as yourself, and what you can do to quit smoking once and for all. In my research paper, I discussed what secondhand smoke was and how it affected society. On a more personally level, I was highly affected by knowing someone who suffered from a disease called, lung cancer, due to their addiction to cigarettes. From the survey I took, 99.9% of people in the classroom knew at least one person who smoked cigarettes In this persuasive speech, I will attempt to persuade you that giving up smoking can benefit you in living a healthy life. I will discuss the basic problems of smoking, the reasons why smoking affects not just you but others around you, and how to give up smoking for once and for all.

First, I will discuss what smoking actually does to your body and how it affects your personal appreance.

I. Smoking affects every organ in your body.

One cigarette contains 4,800 chemicals and 69 of them are cancer causing agents.

According to studies by theCenter for Disease Control, it was reported that smoking is responsible for 90% of lung cancer deaths and 80-90% of COPD, (www.cdc.org par3).

The list of diseases caused by smoking includes COPD, coronary disease, stroke, abdominal aortic aneurysm, oral, throat, cervical, kidney, and stomach cancers.

Many smokers personal appreance is highly affected by smoking cigarettes. 1. Smoking causes a person to have bad breath.

2. Yellow teeth.

3. Bad smelling hair and clothing.

Smoking increases the risk of developing Crohn's disease (CD) but not the risk of ulcerative colitis (UC). Meanwhile smoking cessation increases the risk of a UC flare while CD patients are more likely to show a decrease in disease severity.(Rosenfeld, Greg, and Brian Bressler 1406-1408)

Now that we know what smoking does to your body and health let us further discuss what types of chemicals are found in cigarettes

Cigarettes contain over 4,800 chemicals.

Nicotine is the addictive drug in tobacco smoke that causes smokers to continue to smoke

Nicotine is the major and most addictive ingredient found in cigarettes.

a. Smokers need enough nicotine over a day to “feel normal”.

b. How much nicotine a smoker needs determines how much smoke they are likely to inhale.

The most dangerous chemicals in tobacco are:

1. Tar

a. Tar contains several cancer causing substances.

b. Tar is sticky and brown

c. It stains your teeth, finger tips, and ling tissues.

d. Tar also contains the carcinogen benzopyrene

2. Hydrogen Cyanide

Affects the tiny hairs in our lungs called cilia, which help to clean the lungs by moving foreign substances out.

Hydrogen cyanide stops the lung clearance system from working properly.

Metals including arsenic, cadmium and lead.

Radioactive compounds that are known to be carcinogenic

As we can see smoking is a very bad habit and is not at all benefiecary to your health, now I will give you ways on how you can stop smoking ….What can you do to stop smoking?

Quitting can many tries for people having been smoking for a long period of time. Recorded in a cross-sectional survey of 198 smokers attending five quit smoking clinics in Malaysia (West, 37-47).

The FDA approved seven medications to help smokers quit.

Attend individual and group counseling. Remind yourself and love ones how much money can be saved.

Ask the person if would they like to quit.

Let the person know that you are worried about them and their health.

In conclusion I hope to have helped you understand that smoking is a very bad habit and a danger to your health, others around you, and how much money you are losing.

In this persuasive speech, I have attempted to persuade you that attempting to break the bad habit of smoking can be good for your health, to society, and ways to help someone or yourself kick the bad habit.

88 million no smokers are affected each year health wise and 430,000 people die every year from cigarette smoke. To conclude, this is why you must quit the habit of smoking for good. As mentioned in the beginning, smoking not only affects yourself, but affects the lives of many others personally whether smoking or non-smoking. You must quit smoking because stop for a minute and think about how your future is going to be if you continue to smoke time after time. How will you deal with the consequences of struggling to stop smoking? How would this whole issue affect you, your family, and your friends? Most importantly, will you even live as long to try and quit smoking? Otherwise, it will be costly on your very own life. Once again, the time is now. The bottom line: SMOKING KILLS. it is up to you to take action and join the cause for what it is worth living for, and give it all by easily stating: “Don’t Smoke.”
