She was dreaming, the same dream she had every night for the past year. Every time she laid down in bed, she knew it would happen. That didn’t stop it from being horrific and have her wake up out of breath and some nights, screaming. In her dream she could see the smoke rise in the air and fan out over ceiling and form a…

Tim Goodwin and Charles Dickens both describe the toll the London Fog took on the city in contrasting manners. Our motivations are what get us up in the morning and get us through the day. They are also more long term in that our specific motivators may determine the direction in which we take our lives and what we decide to do with our time. It can often be difficult to identify these motivators in ourselves. One way to see these motivators is to compare and contrast oneself to others. In Liz Murray’s memoir Breaking Night, she describes her hard and challenging life up until the moment that she was accepted into Harvard University. Although Liz’s life is quite different than mine, some aspects of ourselves and our motivations are the same, but of course there are also differences between them as well.…
In the autobiographical novel, Night, by Elie Weisel, there is a persistent change in theme. The story begins in 1944 where Elie was very focused on learning about his religion from Moshe the Beadle. From then(There? meh), they were taken to various concentration camps such as Birkenau, Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Gleiwitz. It wasn’t until April 10, 1945 that they were freed. Imagine being stripped of identity, and insight to reality. This is what being in the fog is like for Bromden from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, written by Ken Kesey. The fog creates another obstacle, that the patients have to go through in order to protect themselves. The novel is set in a mental institution, and focuses on the mistreatment of the patients. One patient in particular is Bromden, who is also referred to as both Chief and Broom. In the novel, it’s strongly implied that Bromden suffers from schizophrenia, based on his delusions and his continuous mention of fog. The fog can be interpreted as a result of Bromden’s schizophrenia, and is an ongoing…
The video, “Night Journey” by Martha Graham is is one of the best-choreographed videos I have come to appreciate for its fluid movements, dramatic music and tragic storyline. Graham’s modern dance style is beautiful and unique which contemplates her strong interpretation of the Greek myth, “Oedipus Rex.” In her 1947 rendition, “Night Journey”, she develops her own language of movement by expressing passion and dedication throughout the act. The video is in black and white, which adds to the overall character due to the era and the story.…
It was settled, the Johnsons were relocating to Bellingham, Washington; since Papa cannot sustain the work in the country. John liked the idea of moving to the city, but Hilda and Lois were not so thrilled. Their house in Bellingham was modern, and John was delighted. From the window, you could see the magnificent Mount Baker. Papa and Hilda started talking about how Mount Baker was like God, making John feel awkward. The girls were a bit worried going to school even with John’s encouragement. After class, John’s classmate, Marvin, led him to the railroad tracks where he got him to smoke a cigarette brought by a fifth-grader named Pete. As they parted, John ran home in dismay, anxious that his parents might find out. When he got home, John saw Mama chopping down some onions, so he ate a piece to take the smell of the cigarette out. John felt guilty for smoking, but thought that at least he did something to please his father by chopping down some wood.…
Seen from afar (e.g. approaching airplane) and depending upon the direction of view with respect to the sun, haze may appear brownish or bluish, while mist tends to be bluish-grey. Whereas haze often is thought of as a phenomenon of dry air, mist formation is a phenomenon of humid air. However, haze particles may act as condensation nuclei for the subsequent formation of mist droplets; such forms of haze are known as "wet haze."…
