The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, or SNCC, was created on the campus of Shaw University in Raleigh in April 1960. SNCC was created after a group of black college students from North Carolina A&T University refused to leave a Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina where they had been denied service. This sparked a wave of other sit-ins in college towns across the South. SNCC coordinated these sit-ins across the nation, supported their leaders, and publicized their activities. SNCC sought to affirm the philosophical or religious ideal of nonviolence as the foundation of their purpose. In the violently changing political climate of the 60's, SNCC struggled to define its purpose as it fought white oppression. Out of SNCC came some of today's black leaders, such as former Washington, D.C. mayor Marion Barry, Congressman John Lewis and NAACP chairman Julian Bond. Together with hundreds of other students, they left a lasting impact on American history. John Lewis was an influential SNCC leader and is recognized by most as one of the important leaders of the civil rights movement as a whole. In 1961, Lewis joined SNCC in the Freedom Rides. Riders traveled the South challenging segregation at interstate bus terminals. In 1963, when Chuck McDew stepped down as SNCC chairman, Lewis was quickly elected to take over. Lewis' experience at that point was already widely respected--he had been arrested 24 times as a result of his activism. In 1963, Lewis helped plan and took part in the March on Washington. At the age of 23, he was a keynote speaker at the historic event. He stepped down from his position in 1966. Stokeley Carmichael, a fellow Freedom Rider, was elected chairman of SNCC and soon after raised the cry of "black power."     Project C called for direct nonviolent action to attract media attention to "the biggest and baddest city of the South". In preparation for the protests, Walker timed the walking distance from the 16th Street Baptist Church, headquarters for the campaign, to the downtown area. He surveyed the segregated lunch counters of department stores, and listed federal buildings as secondary targets should police block the protesters' entrance into primary targets such as stores, libraries, and all-white churches. Fred Shuttlesworth was the start to this because he originally wanted to help protect Martin Luther King, since MLK’s presence was not fully welcomed in The South. The campaign used a variety of nonviolent methods of confrontation, including sit-ins at libraries and lunch counters, kneel-ins by black visitors at white churches, and a march to the county building to mark the beginning of a voter-registration drive.     Roy Wilkins was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 30, 1901. His mother died when he was four years old. Wilkins and his siblings had to relocate to St. Paul, Minnesota to be raised by their aunt and uncle. They lived in a poor community, but although Wilkins was poor, that didn’t stop him from having high aspirations. Wilkins attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Sociology in 1921. In 1929, he married Aminda "Minnie" Badeau who worked as a social worker. The couple didn't have any children of their own, but raised the children of a woman named Hazel Wilkins-Colton. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, Wilkins worked as a Journalist at The Minnesota Daily and became Editor of The Appeal, an African-American newspaper. After graduation he became the Editor of the Kansas City Call. During the years 1931-1934, Wilkins worked as an assistant for the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) undersecretary Walter Francis White. In 1934, Wilkins succeeded the famous W.E.B Du Bois as Editor of "The Crisis" the official magazine of the NAACP. During the years 1949-1950, he chaired the National Emergency Civil Rights Mobilization, which comprised more than 100 local and national groups. In 1950, Wilkins along with A. Philip Randolph and Arnold Aronson founded the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR). The LCCR has become the premier civil rights coalition, and has coordinated the National Legislative Campaign on behalf of every major civil rights law since 1957. He was known as an eloquent spokesperson for the civil rights movement. One of his first duties was to provide support to civil rights activists in Mississippi who were being subjected to a "credit squeeze" by members of the White Citizens Councils.     The city of Albany was heavily segregated and was on a collision course with the Civil Rights Movement. It was in Albany where Martin Luther King suffered one of his greatest defeats. The movement in Albany was started and organized by SNCC.
