Snow and Cold Winter Nights
Winter
Winter is my favorite season and I especially love cold winter nights. I find joy and comfort in wearing warm snuggly sweaters and cozy pajamas. I would rather be in a sweater and jeans than shorts and a tank top any day. For me, it is so much nicer to sit outside and watch the children play during the winter days than summer days. It seems as though during the summer I cannot be outside for twenty minutes without sweating or without my face turning bright red due to the hot sun beaming on my face. I love feeing the freezing air on my face and to see the smoke come from my mouth when I talk.
The one thing that is missing during Texas winter is snow. I remember back in the winter of 1985 when I was three years old, it snowed. I remember being at my grandparents’ house, we went outside early in the morning and started rolling up balls of snow to make a snowman. The snowman had dark brown rocks for buttons, a long ripe carrot for a nose, a brown scarf and my grandpas black cowboy hat. We made snow angels and had snow ball fights. When we were done playing and when our fingers and toes were numb from playing in the snow, we went inside to have some of my grandpas’ homemade hot chocolate. It felt good when we held the hot cups and the heat defrosted or finger tips. That was the one and only time I got to enjoy snow.
One of my favorite things to do on winter nights is to sit outside by a campfire, wrapped in blankets and sipping on some hot chocolate. You will usually find me by a fire almost every weekend during winter. I love the smell of the smoke mesquite wood gives off as it burns. I enjoy watching the smoke going up into the cold air and watching it disappear into the dark blue sky. A calm feeling comes over me as I sit and listen to the wood cracking as it burns. Gazing in to fire makes me forget about all my worries, helps me relax and it gives me a feeling that everything will be ok. I usually find myself staring at the fire and relishing the different

Paraphrase: In "Mirages" by Annie Dillard winter is a time of emptiness. Summer is full of life and activities. War, violent mass murdering used to accomplish political and government goals, hate crimes, acts of violence or harm to individuals with personal differences, and suicide, the ending of ones own life. All of these unfortunately happen on a daily basis and is considered a norm in today’s news broadcasts, but why are these tragic events simply glazedover and accepted as a common part of the news most people listen to while eating dinner? M. J Hardman, a board member of the American Humanist Association, proposes through her work, “Language and War,” that it is the violent language and war glorifying metaphors used in daily life that has made people accustomed and accepting of violence in speech and reality. Martha Kinkade, author of Winter’s Light, recalls violent experiences from her past in Wyoming highlighting Hardman’s ideas that today’s speech is constructed to unintentionally promote the acceptance of violence. Through Kinkade’s poems “Boots, Sugar”, “Skinning”, and “Snowy Milkweed” Hardman’s argument that hostile language is making violence more acceptable is shown through the metaphors and violent thoughts and action of these poems.…

The winter imagery poem I chose that I felt captures the essence of Canadian winters is called “An Ontario Poem”. This poem provides expressive words and vivid examples to provide the reality of Canadian winters. The first couple of stanzas explains just how vigorously the wind blows also showing the reality of just how cold it really gets. It portrays this by stating “...and the gentle breezes blow at seventy-five miles an hour at thirty-five below”. The following four lines discuss how we love the weather although in some situations it ends up being excessive. It gets to the point where, snow falls to where it is touching our backside, or also taking a whiff of the cold air “and your nostrils freeze shut”. Thus meaning the winter air is…

You would think living in the Pacific Northwest, having to succumb to a harsh cold winter snow would be a norm. Well it's not, and unfortunately snow is something of a blessing and more often than not, typically short lived when it does appear. Winter break of 2015 was no exception, I hadn't done anything all break and my parents wanted to go out and do something before everybody was forced to go back to work and school. We had planned to go out sledding with some family friends up on Larch Mountain but nonetheless it hadn't snowed for the past few weeks so the idea of going sledding was beginning to diminish. Leading up to the very last day of break I had, had the mindset that my family and I weren't going to be spending the day out in the…
