Snow Blizzard Analysis
In class, Professor Lehnerer has introduced a news story that covered how Chicagoans preserve parking spots after a major snow blizzard. The thing that the Chicagoans do is that when they need to drive somewhere they have to dig out their car from under all of the snow that has fallen during the blizzard. After they have done that, they move the car out of the way and clear out their parking spot well enough that when they come back they can park normally without having to have to worry about digging their car out again. Once they have dug out the car they put something down as a placeholder for their parking space that no one else takes the spot. For example, they use either a chair, trash cans, flower pots, or even ironing boards. The way

To a minor degree can Canada boast about its tolerance for ethnic diversity. In Chapter 12 of "A Few Acres of Snow," Britain preferred to populate its new colonies, including Canada, with citizens from the British Isles. This policy held distinct advantage because it made British North America more British than French. The Whites during the period were known as the superior race. When politics, religion, a population explosion, and famine conspired in Ireland in the mid-nineteenth century, many Irish came to Canada in search for a new life.…

The book Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson, is a courtroom drama that highlights flashbacks of WWII through the protagonist, Ishmael Chambers, and other characters. The plot of the story is Ishmael’s deep obsession for a Japanese-American girl named Hatsue, who is married to an accused murderer named Kabuo. What I like about the story is how certain clues from the story add to blame Kabuo for the death of Carl Heine. For example, when Horace pointed out, “He got hit pretty hard with something fairly flat, Art. Puts me in mind of a type of gun butt wound I saw a few times in the war. One of those kendo strikes the Japs used.” (Guterson 58). This piece of evidence found points out that Kabuo…

Conflicting perspective always exist due to the inevitable subjectivity of composers, and the inevitable differing opinions of those around us. Conflicting perspectives are represented by the composer in a way that conveys their personal opinion with the aim to influence their responder’s perspective of the issues and themes presented, not in an unbiased and even-handed manner. This is evident within both Snow Falling on Cedars written by David Guterson and the 2008 film Invictus directed by Clint Eastwood within which the negative and ongoing impact of racial tension and prejudice is shown, and the differing perspectives and understanding of human values is explored by both composers.…

“No soldier ever really survives a war” These are the words of Audie Murphy, he was a notable American combat soldier in the U.S army during World War II. War is unmerciful on the body and additionally to the mind and spirit. You set off to war to fight for your country and be a hero, however, when you come back, your perspective on life has been completely changed. Either you die in action or you live to tell your story. The truth of the matter is; if you have been in battle, you will always have effects haunting you at night. Those horrible memories that you saw and lived through on the battlefield will continuously come back. You live every day with the thought of being a murderer. Throughout the novel Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson, war has a vast impact on Kabuo Miyamoto, a Japanese man living on San Piedro Island.…

The poem “beyond the snow belt” by Mary Oliver conveys to us the ignorance of people towards deaths and disasters unrelated to them through the lens of one of them. In the first stanza, Mary paints a seemingly peaceful and happy picture of people’s life by pouring a series of imagery, metaphor and personification. People show no concern about the sufferings and feel no connection to them. As illustrated in the sentence “sweep down their easy paths of pride and welcome ”, those people’s ease and happiness stand in stark contrast to the sufferings experienced by people living in disasters. The second stanza starts with a thought-evoking rhetorical question, revealing the truth of people’s indifference “forget with ease each far mortality”. The bad news comes from a distant place and eventually passes people’s mind with no trace. People living in peace are not able to feel connected to the deaths happening not around them since their lives stay unaffected. In the last stanza, the author echos the theme with an accepting tone “all news arrives as from a distant place”. She points out that it is a usual thing for people to ignore tragedies because of the long distance between them. In their view, all the disasters and sufferings seem to exist in another world; as long as their lives stay the same, all the pains have nothing to do with them. In conclusion, this poem expresses a sad truth that people are more likely to ignore deaths and tragedies happening far away from them and stay totally unrelated.…

There are many different stylistic tools that directors may use in the production of creating good quality motion pictures. In my analysis of Snowpiercer, I will examine the key stylistic tools used in the filming process of this movie and how they contribute to the plot of this fictional film that contains a philosophical message about our present day society. In Looking at Movies, authors Richard Barsam and Dave Monahan define cinematography as the procedure of capturing moving images in order to create a kinetic shot. They elucidate many concepts of cinematography, including various techniques that the director of photography can use in this process. I am going to be analyzing Bong Joon Ho’s choice of filming techniques, more specifically,…

On January 12, 1888, the weather in the west was mild, compared to previous weeks. Little did the people know that a massive cold front was in route and would be catastrophic to the people, their livestock, and the economy in the dekota and nebraska praries. The cold front would cause one of the worst blizzards for the region, killing close to 500 people. The factors that made the death toll so high involve the mild weather before the storm, the lack of technology for warning systems, and bad timing.…

    Essay on St. Louis

One way for the administration of St. Louis to improve the students’ lives is through the creation of free, on campus parking. Early mornings are tough enough on students and finding a parking spot during early-morning-rush-hour shouldn’t be the hassle that it is. Currently, students who drive have four options; to park on campus and risk the parking ticket expense, or to park on the surrounding streets and move their car every two hours to avoid a parking ticket, or to pay to park in neighbouring streets’ parking garages, or to park in the neighbouring establishments’ lots, thus risking a parking ticket and enduring a long walk back to St. Louis. It can be determined that none of these four parking methods are cost or time efficient, because all four methods could leave you with a parking ticket or parking expense, and three of the four methods of parking require a ten to fifteen minute walk back to St. Louis campus. If the administration of St. Louis creates free, on campus parking, both students and faculty can enjoy less traffic congestion surrounding the school and a less stressful, costly, and time consuming decision of where to park.…
