Snow Day
The most beautiful sight I ever saw was the day the entire city of Fort Collins had so much snow; everything had come to a standstill. A low pressure system had blown in the night before, and twenty-four hours and six feet of snow later, the entire city was engulfed in the snow’s icy grip. It didn’t matter what anyone tried, everyone was at the mercy of Mother Nature. But it was not until after the snow had melted away, its destructive beauty was fully comprehended. The sheer weight of six feet of snow was too much, and many buildings collapsed under its mass. As I peered out the window of my door, the bright light of the snow nearly blinded me. though, I was awe struck at the sight before me. It looked like God had taken a big bag of sugar and poured it upon the earth.
The normal objects that would usually have met my eyes were mere blobs in the snow, indistinguishable among the white cover. As I tried to open my door to investigate further, my path was blocked by a wall of snow, unmoving and solid. A slight chill crept over me as the cold air poured into the warm home. The feeling of being trapped comes over me and I quickly try to think of another escape route. From the ground floor, I make my way to the next level of my house, finding myself in my room. Dodging the traps that could easily ensnare me, they had developed from weeks of not cleaning, but I still reached the other side. I struggled to open the tightly shut jaws of my window, not budging one bit, but finally the window gave way to my efforts, and I was free from my house that had become a prison. As I stepped out onto my roof, the crunching of snow underneath my bright yellow rubber boots met my ears, and the crisp, fresh, mossy mountain air filled my nostrils. Trudging through the snow atop my house, I searched for a suitable place to depart from my roof. After finding a rather particularly soft looking patch of ground, I prepared myself to do the unthinkable. With a deep breath, I closed my eyes as I leapt off my roof. As …show more content…
soon as I landed with a thud, however, a cold mush was trickling down my back.
My muscles tensed as I wriggled to try and escape its icy path, but it wasn’t until the snow plopped onto the ground like a glob of oatmeal that I finally found relief. After I gained my bearings, I was once again amazed at the beauty of my surroundings. The ground was covered in diamonds, its different facets reflecting the sunlight so it glimmered magnificently. Each tree, with its fresh pine scent emanating from the spindly branches, was covered with powdered sugar. As I continued to look around, the sky was a dull silver color, the sun hiding from my sight. Even without the sun’s presence, though, everything was perfectly lit, especially the white sheets of snow covering the earth. I reached
down to touch the snow, but I stopped as I looked upon its virgin surfaces, at last noticing how nothing has disturbed it, and the beauty of its untouched form. Upon its white veil, I noticed a discrepancy due to a black figure. As I tried to get a glimpse of this unknown figure, it had started to run, and it is soon too far for me to distinguish what it really was. A beep meets my ears, and I looked down at my watch to see that I have been standing in the same spot for almost an hour. It was not until I had become conscious of this however, that I started to feel the tingling of my hands, the burn of my ears, and the numbness of my toes. I did not really want to go in, but my body started to scream and I stood rooted in place. Finally forced to turn away, I had to go inside and enjoy the beauty from the comfort of my home. With my warm slippers, comfy pajamas, and a fire blazing in the fire place. Yet it is nothing in comparison when I stand outside, the air flowing through my hair, the sights and sounds of nature filling my ears.
