Snow Day Research Paper
Ever since I was a little boy I have always loved the warm weather. Maybe that is because I was born in California. I have always been a fan of the water, big waves, and the warm sand in between my toes. If I had to choose any state or country to live in I would choose Hawaii.
Snow days are not my favorite; it is either too cold outside or there is too much snow. I always have to plow the snow myself. Another reason why I hate snow is because I am a shoe fanatic. I can never wear nice shoes in the snow or else they will get ruined. Also, you cannot get frostbite from being warm. Who doesn't love to always have their shirt off showing what they got?
Swimming has been one of my all time favorite things to do. Back home in California I use to

The development of events outside a person’s control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power; fate. An indifferent power that predetermines the inevitable events and outcome of our lives; fate. A simple four letter word that controls so much more than we, human beings, truly come to realize in our lifetimes; fate. In the novel Snow Falling on Cedars, most of the citizens of San Piedro Island also fail to conclude that this powerful force is either working against them, or determining the outcome of their future. Given the fact that Guterson relates the entire novel to how a Japanese-American man, Kabuo Miyamoto, is accused of murdering a white fisherman by the name of Carl Heine, there are many instances in which fate is the reason behind the outcome of events. The whole reason that Carl actually died was because of chance; his death was a mere accident, not a murder. Similarly, the disastrous snowstorm that hits the island of San Piedro during the trial of Kabuo is also a prime example of fate because it controls how the trial goes on for the many characters involved. Likewise, Kabuo’s fate is decided for him, the final verdict being either life or death. In the end, whether the citizens of San Piedro realized it or not, fate was the main force that decided how the events and lives of those living on the island would turn out.…

I moved to Colorado when I was about 4 or 5 when my Mother married this wonderful man who raised me to be the man I am today. It may sound strange but I loved the idea of growing up in two states because it gave me the wonderful oppurtunity to see the Great Rockies of Colorado and the Great Plaines of Illinois. When I was younger I moved between the states about every 2 or 3 years so half my education is in Illinois while the other half was in Colorado. Growing up in Colorado I had some incredible times like My brothers and I would spend hours in the summer digging in the back yard trying to see if we could actually get to China (never did) , while in the winters we would spend hours in the front yard building Igloos and slides when it snowed about 4ft. In Illinois the summers were equally amazing we would spend the days swimming at the local pool while we would spend the nights outside of U.S. cellular stadium, when the White Sox were good, a couple blocks down watching the fireworks go off either after a home run or at the end of the game. The winters in Illinois were brutally cold but that still didn't stop us from playing some hardcore tackle football at the High School or sledding down some insanely steep hills. These childhood memories will just keep getting fonder and fonder with time.…

It is six o'clock Friday morning. I just got up from an enlargement sleep and looked outside, and I saw that it is snowing. Now I am thinking to myself that everyone will be behind. There was class work and test to be done, but it is snowing. "Why are you doing this to me?" I said looking out the window. My kids came running down the hall saying "terrific!" "no school and no test." I was so mad that it was a snow day. Time had passed, and now it looks like we have at less have three inches. That is when my kids came running and asked is they can go outside to play with some friends. I said that they can as long as they come back in when it got enormously cold. They came back in and got me to go outside with them, so I did even though…

In the winter of sixth grade me and my family had gone on a ski trip at MT. Hood. So far everything was going great I was finally getting the hang of snowboarding because it was my first year. Snowboarding was a little scary but I was very scared of the ski lift I don't really know why but i was very scared to get off of it. Later that day i did not know that my fear of ski lifts was about to get a way lot worse. I was riding on the ski lift when all of the sudden I noticed my hair was stuck. The lift was almost finished by the time I had noticed which gave me no time to get it unstuck from the chair. The ride had come to a stop when the people operating the ride noticed I could not get off. But by the time they had noticed it was too late…

A calm wintry night looks like mother nature making a white, cold, fluffy, blanket with every exhale of snowflake-filled breath. It looks more peaceful, more connected, more insulated when snow makes canopies out of trees, rolling hills out of rows of cars, sledding trails out of deck stairs, sugar dipped cones out of pine trees, and marshmallow tops on everything. The world looks clean and bright on a calm wintry night.…

Snowboarding was a sport that was created as a way to surf and skateboard in the winter. Many people had already been snowboarding by standing up on toboggans and sleds, but the first real product that came out was called the Snurfer in 1965 by a man named Sherman Poppen. Some people quickly started picking up on the idea and two men named Tom Sims and Dimitrije Milovich who created Sims Snowboards (1976), and Winterstick (1972) started coming out with their own designs and input on the sport. Jake Burton Carpenter created Burton Snowboards in 1977, which is one of the most famous and most used snowboard company in the whole business, even today. Although snowboarding was taking off, all ski resorts but a few were closing their doors to the…

The Unspoken Love in “Those Winter Sundays” Robert Hayden was one of the most celebrated poets of his days; he was the first African-American to serve as the nation’s official poet, a distinct honor that is now called the U.S. Poet Laureate (poets.org). Among his enduring works, “Those Winter Sundays” stands out as one of the utmost anthologized poem. In fact, ten years ago, on a survey conducted by Columbia University Press, it ranked the 266th most anthologized poem in the English language (Biespiel). In my opinion, if they were to repeat the survey today, it would probably still rank the same or better. ” Those Winter Sundays” is a fascinating masterpiece; Hayden’s words -carefully…

For my gut reaction writing, I read “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden. The poem brought back memories of cold winter nights by the fire. My living room has a gas fire, and even when it is below 40, the living room can still be 80. The second stanza reminded me of the days I would spend cross country skiing, especially the part where Hayden says the cold is splintering and breaking, because when you are cross country skiing in the mountains around Seattle, you can hear each little sound caused by the wildlife in the trees. The other part of the stanza also rang true to me. My parents divorced when I was young, and I spent most of my time with my dad early on. He was working a whole lot at this time, and he would be short-tempered sometimes,…

It is not often that Portland sees snow, but when we do the whole city pauses. Schools are closed, roads are treated and somebody, somebody always gets into an accident. Sometimes the snow melts just as quickly as it falls and other times it leaves you wondering if there will ever be an end in sight. On a scale of zero to ten in snow preparedness, Portland is probably at a two or three. Still, everyone loves a snow day and and its promise of a break. Do not be disillusioned though, as one's love for snow can just as quickly turn into dismay.…

In December kids leave school for winter break, people go on vacation to appreciate time with their kids, families celebrate Christmas, and teachers relish three weeks off. After Winter Break starts, most families go to places like Florida to be in a warm climate, California to see family, and Utah so they can ski. In Utah, I can see giant kept mountains that are so big the top is not visible and pine trees that look like giants that took over the whole mountain. If a person actually skis in Utah, they will find out that the restaurants smell like freshly cooked burgers, they will think the mountain will look like a giant painting, and they will feel the snow slowly packing up into ice. When I ski, I will normally ski for a week, and when I come home to prepare for Christmas, I immediately see a great amount of wonderful things like children, playing in the snow, snow piling up like dust, and families preparing for Christmas. During Christmas, I can hear carolers, singing holiday carols, and see families inside their house opening presents. Sometimes after Christmas, I go on vacation again due to the fact that it is getting colder, and when I take a vacation to Florida, I like the cold breeze with the warm climate and the smell of fresh ice cream that take my thoughts away from winter. The amusement parks in Florida the main reason my family travels there and it is because, during the winter there are no amusement…
