Cause/Effect Journal: Kabuo Miyamoto
“No soldier ever really survives a war” These are the words of Audie Murphy, he was a notable American combat soldier in the U.S army during World War II. War is unmerciful on the body and additionally to the mind and spirit. You set off to war to fight for your country and be a hero, however, when you come back, your perspective on life has been completely changed. Either you die in action or you live to tell your story. The truth of the matter is; if you have been in battle, you will always have effects haunting you at night. Those horrible memories that you saw and lived through on the battlefield will continuously come back. You live every day with the thought of being a murderer. Throughout the novel Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson, war has a vast impact on Kabuo Miyamoto, a Japanese man living on San Piedro Island.

Kabuo starts to believe he does not deserve anything as good as he has. His feelings are beginning to get the best of him. “He felt he did not deserve for a moment the happiness his family brought to him, so that late at night, when he couldn’t sleep, he imagined that he would write them a note explicating his sin completely. He would leave them and go to suffer alone, and his unhappiness would overwhelm his anger.” (169) Kabuo does not want to bring his family into his misdemeanors. He believes they need no part in it, and he will be better off on his own. So late at night he pictures how he could just pack up and leave.
In the end, war is crucial and hard for many. No two people are alike when it comes to the effects of war. Some have horrible flashbacks imprinted on their minds that only very few can see through. In addition, others have physical wounds that everyone
