One of Paul’s first significant frustrations is when his soccer coach, Coach Walski, kicks Paul off the team. Paul got booted off the team because he is visually impaired, which they wouldn’t have had knowledge of if his mother hadn’t submitted the form in the first place. Plus, throughout the story, Paul tells his mother and father he can in fact see perfectly fine, though they just don’t seem to listen, “‘I can see! Don’t you know that? Why did you have to fill out that stupid form when you know I can see?’”(Pg 64). Also, that impacted Paul pretty hard, considering that he was very much looking forward to soccer. One of the first questions that Paul asked to Mrs.Gates was, “Do you have a soccer team?”(Pg 26). Paul was deprived of the one…

In some cases, I believe passage of time could be acceptable, but in cases of serious personal and psychological injury, I do not believe passage of time should be such a factor.…

She places her hands on her knees and bends over in order to catch her breath. She looks out at the goal and the goalkeeper, then takes a quick glance at her teammates– her eyes scanning the stadium as she does. The vivid colors of the American and Chinese flags stand out no matter where she looks. The sound of silence engulfs her, and she can feel the audience’s eyes drilling holes into her. She takes her hands off her knees, stands up and looks down at the ball. The Chinese goalkeeper keeps her eyes focused on her opponent and the ball, making sure she does not look away for even a second. She takes a deep breath, and is overwhelmed by the smell of dirt and sweat. She looks down at the ball and then the goalie.…

People ask me why I care so much. They tell me it’s just a game, get over it. But soccer has never been just a game to me. Soccer has been consuming my time, thoughts, and body since my parents signed me up for small-time recreational soccer twelve years ago that developed into extremely competitive travel soccer. They, perhaps unknowingly, threw me headlong into a life of traveling countless miles, long nights of practice, and an unforgettable amount of tears, sweat, and bloodshed. All which persisted over the course of my extensive soccer career.…

Initially, my understanding of soccer was very minimal compared to what the coach, Ahmad, had to teach us. I saw the game of soccer from a brand new perspective after practicing with him. General terms like “man-to-man” and “wing cross”, both widely known among soccer players, were very new to me. Coach Ahmad also had special code words like “the three eagles” that he gave to different plays, that way we could communicate loudly with the other players without the opponents figuring out our strategy. As we met more and more each week, my teammates and I began to get used to the new vocabulary and methods of practice, strategies we were not familiar with, which helped our team interact with each other to strengthen our inner spirits. After only a few weeks, most players had gained a large amount of experience and their soccer skills had drastically improved. We had all become a discrete soccer team ready to begin the school’s private league.…

But from his cringing attitude he would seem to an outsider the one being flailed. With burning-red face, the woman accepts the role of aggressor as penance for the fact, the incessant shameful fact that he has to wrestle with the world while she hides here, in solitude, at home. This is normal, but does not seem to them to be so.” He stated in his writing that ‘his father’ caused him to be depressed which made him hate life. He moves back and forth from the dark past and bring the readers back into present which makes it hard for the reader to understand at times. The writing shows that it’s hard for the father to see his son go through hard times, but also happy to see him be successful. He is wonderful to watch, playing soccer. Smaller than the others, my son leaps, heads, dribbles, feints, passes. When a big boy knocks him down, he tumbles on the mud, in his green-and-black school uniform, in an ecstasy of falling. I am envious. Never for me the jaunty pride of the school uniform, the solemn ritual of the coach's pep talk, the camaraderie of shook hands and slapped backsides, the shadow-striped hush of late afternoon and last quarter, the solemn vaulted universe of official combat, with its cheering mothers and referees striped like zebras and the bespectacled timekeeper alert with his…
