First and foremost, soccer, also known as football in some countries, and basketball have strict rules that are similar yet different. For example, with soccer one of the major rules is you can't use your hands unless you are the goalie; whereas, in b-ball you use your hands the entire game and are not allowed to use your feet at all. For example, in soccer you are required to wear knee high socks and shin guards that the socks cover completely; whereas, in basketball you wear mid-shin socks and no shin guards. Both sports require special footwear that help the player particpate in that sport without slipping all over the court or field. Cleats are required in soccer to help the player grip the ground to improve their kicks and running; however, in basketball you need to wear high top sneakers to help the athlete shoot and turn quickly on the slick surface.
