Fire Prevention Week

Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored Fire Prevention Week. The 2012 Fire Prevention Week is October 7 – 13, and the theme is "Have 2 Ways Out!"
To encourage observance of Fire Prevention Week, Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Hudgens in conjunction with the State Fire Marshal's Office sponsors activities that support fire safety and prevention. Each year a statewide poster, fire safety tips calendar poster and two fire safety essay contests are conducted for Georgia students. The poster and fire safety tips calendar contests are designed for grades K – 5; the fire safety house essay contest is designed for grades K – 3. The fire safety essay contest is geared to grades 6 – 12. Additionally, Commissioner Hudgens and the State Fire Marshal urge schools and communities to participate in the annual statewide fire drill scheduled for Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. for those schools that are able to participate on this day. If inclement weather, please reschedule the drill for the following Wednesday, October 17, 2012. If your school's schedule conflicts with the dates above, please conduct your fire drill anytime during the month of October.

Fire Prevention Week observances also include the 20th Annual Life, Fire and Safety Awards Luncheon. The 2012 sponsors are, the Office of the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, along with the Georgia Public Safety Educators Association, Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation, Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers, the Georgia Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, the Georgia Fire Sprinkler Association, the Southeastern Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Georgia Fire Inspectors Association, Georgia Arson Control Program, Inc., Georgia Insurance Information Service, Georgia Propane Gas Association, Georgia Association of Convenience Stores, Atlanta Apartment Association, Inc., Georgia Hospital Association, Kidde

The United States currently depends on approximately 1.1 million fire fighters to protect its citizens and property from losses caused by fire. Of these fire fighters, approximately 313,000 are career and 823,000 are volunteers. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the U.S. Fire Administration estimate that on average, 100 fire fighters die in the line-of duty each year. In fiscal year 1998, Congress recognized the need for further efforts to address the continuing national problem of occupational fire fighter fatalities and funded NIOSH to implement a fire fighter safety initiative.…

Wildland firefighters courageously face tremendous peril with each fire they extinguish. There have been many fatalities of good, hard workers who were just doing their job. Deaths can be averted however, if every member of every crew follows The Ten Standard Firefighting Orders and The Eighteen Watchout Situations. These two lists of commands and warnings were developed by a task force in nineteen fifty seven to prevent any casualties during fighting of wildland fires. They are modeled in part by general orders followed by the United States Armed Forces and the research of sixteen tragedy fires. If always followed correctly and memorized, danger can be avoided to a certain extent. Today I’m going to talk about Standard Firefighting Order number eight, “Give clear instructions and be sure they are understood.”…

    Fire Fighter Arson

    • 720 Words
    • 3 Pages

The reason I decided to choose this topic, and not something about a particular part of the fire service, is because I was watching a TV show CSI where they solve crimes and such. Well this topic of fire fighter arson was on the show where a fire fighter set a fire on purpose. So I decided that it looked interesting considering it is what I want to do. Fire fighter arson is basically when a fire fighter sets a fire and I will break it down on why some fire fighters do it, affects of fire fighter arson, basic profile of the fire fighter arsonist, fire service responsibilities in preventing fire fighter arson, and actions to take when a problem is suspected.…
