There are many different sociological approaches towards health and ill health and they can be used in many different scenarios, such as the scenario of Aziz and Tamsela. Aziz and Tamsela have 4 young children and Tamsela’s parents are also living with them. Their house only has 3 bedrooms so will be cramped and over crowed since there is eight people living in a tiny house. Their house is in a poverty-stricken and discouraging part of London. Also, their house is in a bad state as it is damp and they find it quite costly to keep the house warm in winter since Aziz and Tamsela both don’t have a job.…

Life style patterns and behaviors affect our health along with economic and social structure. According to our text (Williams / Torrens 2010, alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug use create a snow ball of problems that affect our health. Excessive alcohol use creates cirrhosis of the liver, if alcohol is consumed while driving or prior to driving it causes vehicular accidents and work related injuries if consumed prior to or during work. Last week I spoke with a 20 year old male who stated his anger escalates after he consumes alcohol. He also stated his father was killed at a night club by someone that consumed excessive alcohol. These actions affect our society because they can create an increase in violent crimes and an increase in homicide and violence incidence. Cigarette use is another behavior that is associated with numerous illness, including cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, and oral cancer. Government intervention has reduced consumption and reduced illnesses associated with the use of tobacco and piper smoking.…
There are a wide variety of challenges that come when trying to reduce inequities in health care, but the social determinants of health are a hard challenge to tackle. Social determinants of health are the circumstances surrounding a person being born, growth of said person, employment, housing, and aging and these circumstances include a broad range of factors, such as socioeconomic status, education, employment, and access to healthcare services. I remember this as determiners that are non-health related that affect your health outcomes. The social determinants of health are linked to one another and frequently support one another. People from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, for instance, might have trouble finding work and educational opportunities,…
Social stratification is a system in which society ranks categories of people in hierarchy. In the United States we group people together by status of wealth. The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels. Social determinants relate to this issue because it is one of the key things that is influencing teen pregnancy and/or parenthood. It has been proven that teenage girls who have either not done well at school, dropped out, or do not have a clear idea for their future are the ones that are more likely to become pregnant. A reason for this is because the girl has no plans for her future meaning she has less care if she accidentally becomes pregnant.…
Illness is ‘a state of poor health’.’If a person has an illness they can experience a range of different symptoms, and tests may not always identify the cause as it could be just a cold or a cough. Illnesses identify a condition that exists which causes someone harm or pain. Also being ill usually requires the patient’s condition to be classified according to the medical knowledge and practise. If you’ve an illness then symptoms like coughs, sore throats, runny nose etc are all examples. Illnesses are usually just short term and last days maybe even a week or so. Illness also looks at the biomedical model of health as it focuses on the NHS and doctors/hospitals etc. It highlights the expertise of the medical profession.…

Socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity and gender play a huge influence on health status as it subconsciously influences the way physicians interacts with patients, the sort of treatment patients receive at hospitals, and how their health is overall based on how society influences them. The main trends noticed throughout time is that the lower your socioeconomic status is, the poorer your health status is; if you are African-American, Hispanics, etc… receive poorer treatments because of the stereotypes toward their ethnicity in society and because these races tend to have lower SES than other races; for gender, men tend to take on riskier careers in comparison to women so they tend to die earlier and visit the hospital more often while women tend to take better care of themselves and seek medical treatment more often than…
I am Brazilian with Korean heritage, born and raised in Sao Paulo. Although I had the resources for good education and health, I was never in peace knowing that others needed help or were in disadvantage. My emphatic nature has shown early on in my life. When I was eight years old, I started rescuing cats and dogs from the streets on my walk home from school. I felt responsible to protect them from accidents and other harms.…
Emma’s day began like any other. She woke up in her college dorm room at The George Washington University covered in her down comforter and sheets, sunken into her tempurpedic mattress topper. Getting out of her warm bed and into the crisp cold air of the open dorm room air was tough. Winter in D.C. was turning out to be colder than she expected. She breathed in the fresh air before her, and walked to her Brita water filter to get herself a glass of water. While drinking the crystal clear water, Emma scrolled through her instagram feed and saw a picture that reminded her of her mom. She proceeded to give her mom a call. After she hung up the phone, Emma went to the bathroom and washed her hands, brushed her teeth, and used her favorite mouthwash.…
Social class is the grouping of people together and their status is based on their social and economic standing in the society. Those who make more money and seem to be well off are considered the higher class, while those who work minimum wage are considered middle class they have money but most spend it all on paying bills, then there is the low class which I would consider the homeless and those who have nothing.…
