Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT)
This assignment links very clearly with Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT). SCCT details how career and academic interests are established, how career choices are developed, and how these career choices revolve into action. This is achieved through a focus on several cognitive-person variables such as self-efficacy and outcome expectations and on how these variables interact with other aspects of the person and his or her environment such as gender, ethnicity and barriers to help shape the course of their career development. These beliefs are not permanent, but are continuously shifting based on a variety of factors such as one’s interactions with other people, one’s internal or external environment and one’s own behaviours. Individuals cultivate their sense of self-efficacy from their own personal performance, learning by example, social interactions, and how they feel in a situation. (Gibbons & Shoffner, 2004) (Lent, et al., 1994) Figure I in Appendix I highlights how the concept of SCCT works.
The theory of SCCT fit into this assignment in many ways. It made me aware of the fact that my personal goal setting is influenced by self-appraisal of my capabilities. The higher the perceived self-efficacy the bigger the goal that I will set for myself and the stronger my commitment to the goal will be.
