Social Construction of Facebook

Everyone has Facebook these days, and almost every business does as well, it's very rare that you see a business advertisement that doesn't say “a3dd us on Facebook!” on the bottom. Our world is surrounded by Facebook, it's everywhere, and unfortunately many modern lives revolve around it. It's addictive, and if you have a Faceb0ook page, and a reliable source to internet, you're typically checking0 your Facebook on a daily basis. You don't even need a computer any longer, every new phone comes with the Facebook application already downloade0d. Facebook changes people, it changes the way we look at things, the way we act about things, and the way we view the people around us. The things that are posted on Facebook changes the way that people look at us, and at this point, can effect our lives more than we think. Employers are looking at Facebook to get more information about possible employees. Colleges even look at Facebook for insight on prospective students. Facebook can effect our self-concept as we see beautiful people all over Facebook, perfect smiles, perfect bodies, perfect hair. It's hard not to judge ourselves and ruin our self esteem if we aren't one of those perfect people. It's a source of social comparison, we see everyone else's pictures online, and are constantly making judgements about their pictures, and comparing ourselves to those one would consider “perfect0.” It can also be a source of self-verification, as that as people “like” or post positive comments on your posts or pictures, it confirms positive beliefs that they've had about themselves. The pictures that a person posts on Facebook, and the comments that they make, are ways for people's self-prese0ntation, and may not exactly be0 who they really are, but rather who they'd like to be. We then tend to stereotype people, and judge them from what we see on Facebook. We also tend to judge people's popularity based on the number of friends they have, though the majority of the
