According to the World Health Organisation (1948) the definition of health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. There are also three specific types of health; physical health, emotional health and mental health. Physical health is connected to mental and emotional health. There are three main stages in health care; primary, secondary and tertiary care. Primary health care refers to the work of health professionals who act as first point of consultation for all patients within the health care system and is ‘essential health care’ that is based on scientifically sound and socially acceptable methods and technology, which make the universal health care more accessible to people in the community (Wikipedia, 2015). Primary health care usually occurs before an illness to prevent it from happening. Secondary health care is the health care services provided by medical specialists and other health care professionals who generally do not have first contact with the patient, for example, cardiologists (Wikipedia, 2015). Tertiary care is specialized consultative health care, usually for inpatients and on referral from a primary or secondary health care stage, to a facility that has individualised care for advanced medical treatments, such as cancer management (Wikipedia, 2015).
