Factors such as unemployment, lack of education, living in unhealthy environments and unsanitary, play a major role towards how an individual presents his or herself and where they rank when compared to the society. The socio- medical model of health focuses on the social factors that contribute to health and wellbeing in society. When this model considers social factors, it particularly looks at the impact of poverty, poor housing, diet and pollution. E.g. poor housing and poverty are causes to respiratory problems, and in response to these causes origins of ill health, the socio-medical model is aimed to encourage society to include better housing and introduce programmes to tackle poverty as a solution. Life Course theory plays a key role in studying the relation between health and social causation. Such an approach involves studying the health of individuals or groups of individuals, not solely from a biological and medical approach, but within socio-cultural and economic contexts as well. Thus, it would involve trying to understand how factors like an individual’s economic status or his experience of an event significant to his place or to a group of people he belongs to, have an effect on his health.…

Socio-medical model of health is often referred to as being a positive model of health. The socio-medical model focuses on social factors that contributes to the health and wellbeing within society. Research shows that life expectancy has risen, and death rates have fallen since the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this also includes infant mortality. This corresponded with improvements in sanitation, the building of new council houses, providing clean water and improved overall standards of living. The evidence from the research supports the view that social and environmental conditions contribute to disease and that the cause of ill health is not only located in the individual.…

Factors related to housing, such as overcrowding in housing, housing tenure type and homelessness have potential impacts on health. The effects of overcrowding occur in combination with other environmental health factors such as poor water quality and sanitation, which are associated with increased risk of infectious diseases such acute rheumatic fever, tuberculosis, and skin and respiratory infections (Department of Health, 2012). High rates of rheumatic heart disease among Indigenous Australians are largely due to an increased exposure to Streptococcus pyogenes, related to overcrowding and poor living conditions (Hickie et al., 2011).…

The fundamental principle underpinning public health is the provision of a comprehensive, integrated, multidisciplinary service to individuals, families and communities (Hanifan, et al., 2002). The health status of an individual may be shaped by the social determinants which are specific to that patient. The poor health of the patient may be caused by factors which are beyond the patient’s control. Health is not just the outcome of genetic or biological processes but is also influenced by the social and economic conditions in which we live (Farrell, et al., 2008). The patient’s health encompasses physical, mental and social aspects.…

Sociology of health is not confined to the narrow, area of medicine. According the World Health Organisation(WHO), health is ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’. This is all-inclusive definition focuses on a positive view of health, rather than regarding health merely as not being ill. This definition could be argued as being overly idealistic and too broad as, in reality, most of us are not completely physically, mentally well at any one time. Using this definition we are unhealthy if we have a headache or are a bit fed up. Another problem is that it sees health as an absolute term in that it fails to take into account the notion that, within any given society, people understand different things by the concept of health – that it can change over time and between cultures. According to Dubos(1987) good health involves being able to function effectively. This implies that being healthy or ill are relative experiences/ concepts. From this standpoint, health means very different things to different people and the health of an individual can be judge against, for example, their gender, age and occupation. For example, a young, male professional athlete may well have a very different conception of health and wellbeing compared with an elderly, wheelchair-bound female. This view that health is a relative concept will be explored in the subsection on the social construction of health and illness.…
