Social Injustices in Afghanistan
The past several years have not been kind to the people of Afghanistan. More than a decade of conflict and war has left Afghanistan defenseless against the infamous Taliban regime. The several different factions of Afghanistan found the power to unite against the Russians, overthrowing the Marxist Government in the early 1990’s but failed to establish a strong and united government due to cultural and religious differences. The Taliban took advantage of the Civil War raging in Afghanistan and took control of the country, ruling with brutality and force. This book is similar to The Kite Runner in the way that it tells the story of a child who matures while facing social injustice. This book tells the story of a young girl named Mariam who was born out of wedlock, which forces her and her mother to live in solitude to avoid public prejudice. After the death of her mother, Mariam is forced out of her childhood home and into the real world of Afghanistan, a world where women are treated as objects rather than people. Mariam is with her selfish father and his three wives for a short few days before being wedded, against her will, to a man who is thirty years older.
