Social Media (Facebook,Twitter) lowers teens self esteem because teens feel like they have to fit in. When teens get on to Facebook or Twitter and look at how many people have or haven’t liked their status they might start to feel bad about themselves. Alicia K Swope says “Other studies have found that people with lower self esteem tend to spend more time on these types of sites than people who are more confident. This can have a negative effect on their self image because sites like Facebook only showcase certain aspects of other people's lives, and it tends to be the positive aspects.Once again, this creates an unrealistic comparison.” (personal.psu.edu) So while people who aren’t confident are spending time on Facebook instead of lifting them up,it is bringing them down because they can’t see all the emotions in the lives of the other people. It’s hard to not start comparing to the pictures that we see because they only tell a certain part of the story and the picture could’ve been changed or altered. “ It is already more common for women to have issues with negative body image than it is for men, and could this internet usage be pushing that even further. There seems to be some impact because the media somehow forces us to change our perception of ourselves. We are constantly comparing ourselves to an ideal that probably isn’t very realistic,” says Alicia K Swope (personal.psu.edu). So the new internet usage is causing teens to compare themselves to things that aren’t exactly true. Some people don’t realize it ,but photoshopping causes so many problems.
