The topic that was chosen for this literature review was how nurses and healthcare workers using social media effects professional issues. The research database used was ProQuest and EBSCOhost, which were both found through the Mylambton library resources. There were ten articles found to begin with, and it was narrowed down to five. The ten articles were sorted by highlighting and summarizing the most relevant information to the topic. The five were chosen based on the relevance to the topic at hand. The articles were summarized, and four common themes were selected. The first common theme discussed was the use of social media with nursing students. Next, a major theme throughout the articles was misconceptions of privacy in social media regarding to healthcare. Another prevalent issue, was pictures being posted on social media showing implicating content. Finally, the positive outlooks on social media in the healthcare field was considered.

There is a common theme among the articles that social media is as an effective form of communication and exchange of information. This is an advantage for healthcare workers in areas that are lacking in resources to reach out to others who can provide them with the information needed. With social media being a popular distraction, it’s an opportunity for educators to use it as a form of educational purposes. There’s also an advantage for health care workers to reach out to other colleagues using this form of communication. For example, LinkedIn is a professional form of Facebook for the users to network and connect with peers. Using this site maintains the professional relationship and creates a forum for healthcare workers to interact without potential inappropriate
