Today the United States is not the same as it was years ago, our needs and wants are different. People try to earn money to get something they don’t need and simply want; Meanwhile, they are struggling to provide themselves with necessaries. The American Dream today is not dead, but instead it is viewed differently today than it was in the past. The American Dream is about how each individual will have an equal chance at succeeding through hard work and determination. The American Dream today is different because of the influences that society puts on a person.
Social media shows that the American Dream today is different than it was in the past. In the article “Social Media Inspires The American Dream”, Sandy Miller talks …show more content…
The American Dream is one of the many things wealth effects. In the podcast “Buried in debt, young people find dreams elusive”, Jennifer Ludden talks about her take on wealth affecting her American Dream: “The first of the month, I might have one hundred dollars to live on for two weeks, which doesn't even pay my transportation cost”(Ludden). This shows that she is struggling with earning enough money to get what she needs in order to achieve the American Dream, and so are many others. Wealth can control people's lives economically and socially, which will have an impact on them being able to achieve the American Dream. In “Of Mice and Men” John Steinbeck shows George talking to Lennie saying,“If I was alone I could live so easy. I could get a job an’ work an no trouble… I could take my fifty bucks and go into town and get anything I want… You can’t keep a job and you lose me ever’ job I get. Jus’ keep shovelin all over the country all the time.”(Steinback). This piece of evidence shows that wealth controls them. They keep moving because they can’t keep their jobs, and they need the money to survive. Wealth stops Lennie and George from achieving the American Dream due to their lack of money. The evidence in this paragraph shows that wealth does have an impact on the ability to achieve the American Dream …show more content…
In the article “What is the American Dream?”, Kimberly Amadeo talks about the American Dream and says, “It is not a dream of motorcars and high wages… These reject the American Dream changing based on materialism” (Amadeo). The phrase “these reject the American Dream changing” shows how the American Dream didn’t change and it’s still about saving money, without being in huge debt and feeling uncomfortable in their daily life. However, that point of view is incorrect because social media (new technology) and wealth has changed the American Dream. In the article “Social Media Inspires the American Dream” Sandy Miller talks about how the internet (social media) makes it easier to accomplish a job that would be hard without the internet,” If you were raised in America, that means you were exposed to the basic premise of the American Dream which is that in America anything is possible. If you are willing to work hard enough you can be whatever you want to be”(Miller). An example is becoming a famous singer with youtube if someone became popular, or starting a blog and become an author. The American Dream did change, now it’s based on material items and becoming more powerful, before it was about feeling happy with where you are without struggling to provide needed items like food, water, clothing, and shelter, which a majority of the population can provide themselves
