Technology of the current era can cause many different problems on people’s social well-being, which is a huge part of everyone’s life. A study shows that American people ranging from age eight to eighteen, spend about seven and a half hours a day on some sort of electronic. That is an absurd amount of time and leaves little time for in person social interaction between kids. This problem isn’t just in America. As a study in the United Kingdom shows, that their kids spend about eight hours a day with electronics. People really need to start realizing the dangers of these statistics. With all of this time consumed by electronics, it leaves very little time for people to interact with each other in a positive social manner, and kids can also develop problems from spending so much time with technology. People post things about their lives that everyone can see on social networking sites such as Facebook. This can lead to a lot of different problems including cyber bullying. Instead of posting all of this online, people should become close friends in-real life with people, so they can trust them with this information and develop…

Amy Goldwasser in her essay, “What’s the Matter with Kids Today?” challenges the idea that “kids today” don’t read or write. She argues that an average of 16.7 hours is spent a week in the average teen’s life reading and writing online. However, there are educational and social forms of reading and writing that kids do online also. Contrary to Goldwasser’s opinion and her call to action to stop regarding the Internet as a villain, I would argue that the Internet and cell phones are indeed what is wrong with kids today. It is agreeable that the Internet serves two purposes for kids today: educational research tool and social media networking. In order to refute Amy Goldwasser’s stance, evidence will be discussed…

In “What’s the Matter with Kids Today” by Amy Goldwasser, she talks about teens’ use of technology and the affect on them. Her main point is that the Internet has expanded kids’ minds when it comes to school and themselves. Kids tend to know more than the previous generations because they have easier access to information by using the Internet. In her article she states that several reports show that teens do not read or write as much as they used to, and that they are only interested in their IPods and computers. Amy disagrees with these findings saying that the Internet is a great way to communicate, and has created a generation full of influential people, such as writers, activists, ect. The Internet gives teens a means to write and share…

“What Adolescents Miss When we let them grow Up in Cyberspace” written by Brent Staples is a great essay and has many strong points. But I’m going to disagree with this one. The fact that staples has argued that the internet is taking over teenagers social life has offended me and my generation. I differ with his arguments. I believe that the internet has made today’s teenagers more socialize and more connected than ever. Facebook, msn, gmail, twitter etc is a great tool for teenagers to stay in touch and makes it easier for each of them to communicate. The internet is a great tool for teenagers to meet and make new friends around the world. I believe that the internet has made teenagers more attentive than before. Let’s use twitter as an example. Twitter is a social site where you and other people update your status. It is a site where you can check what your friends are doing at the moment. It is a great tool to broadcast news to people (including teenagers who does not read or watch the news) without even turning the TV on or reading a long article from a newspaper. It is a wonderful site to keep each individual updated and informed with each other and around the world.…

Secondly, people should moderately use technology because an over-use of technology, such as in the use of social media sites, causes a vulnerability in real-life social skills. In “What’s the Matter with Kids Today?,” Amy Goldwasser incorrectly points out that children should use their form of reading and writing in their social lives and apply it to education. Goldwasser refutes against the claims of the older generation in that the Internet has negative consequences on children and instead, argues that the Internet beneficially impacts children because it is a form of communication that is composed of a generation of writers, activists, and storytellers. She believes that the internet has encouraged teenagers to “read and write for fun;…

Allowing minors to to use social media takes away their characteristic of being antisocial, as well as making them very knowledgeable about current events that are happening in the world they live in. It is shown in a study at Eastwood High School that two in three students who eat alone during lunch have absolutely no social media to interact with others. This shows that social media plays a key factor in the interaction of the making of new friends. Along with the making of new friends there is also the gaining of knowledge about certain events occurring in our world. As shown in a CNN study over the years, allowing children to watch the CNN student news gives them a lot of knowledge about the world which does not make them oblivious to these things like many other people are around the United States. This allows the students to realize that they should be thankful for…

Whether it be facebook, instagram, twitter , pinterest , tumblr , or snapchat . Social media is another phone. It is how we connect. In this day and age it is almost a part of life. Many people prefer to speak to a person over the internet as opposed to speaking over the phone or go and meet up with the same person. NBC news did a coverage on this issue. In their article they stated that “Many kids don’t understand the basics of simple conversation…with so much communication happening online or via text, kids have few opportunities to see manners and good communication in action, and even fewer chances to practice.” (McCready, Amy “Don’t Let Technology Rob Kids of Social Skills” pg 1). Social skills are pivotal to a person’s success in life. Without them it will be very arduous to build trusting relationships with others. If a person does not know how to approach unexpected situations in a work environment it will be very difficult for them to maintain a job . Another benefit of social skills is that if you know how to interact with others you can be happier. Great interpersonal skills could give you the confidence to discuss your ideas clearly with others. In addition to this if you can socialize with others you will be more comfortable going out to social events such as dinners , parties , ceremonies , carnivals , or even amusement…

When it comes to the topic of social media, most of us will agree that it is good. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is when some think that social media is bad because we use it too much and the same group of people think that it is bad because of cyberbullying. Although social media can be bad because of cyber bullying and time wasting, it is good for teenagers and adults because teenagers can use it for school and expressing themselves and adults can also use social media for their jobs and communication.…

As we approach 2014 social media has been very advantageous communicating tool for people of all ages to use. To start off, social media helps individuals find and make new friends. According to "The upsides of selfies: Social media isn't all bad for kids" "When it comes to relationships with friends, more than half (52%) of teens said social media has made them better versus just 4% who said it has negatively affected those relationships." This clearly shows that many of the teens who used social media helped out their relationships. Critics may argue that kids who use electronic devices lose…

Many kids are growing up in a technological advanced world. They have phones, computers, social medias, and virtual reality games. Although this may seem like a negative factor, it is not. Kids are growing up learning about who they are with the use of technology while we know who we are but technology is changing that from us. According to the article,”Growing Up With Social Networks and Online Communities,” the author states,” Students can benefit from reciprocal sharing with bloggers from other ethnic groups or nations. By reading peer postings, children get confirmation that they are not alone in how they feel or interpret current events. These benefits increase if teachers make assignments that can connect student motivation with existing resources,”. (Growing Up With Social Networks and Online Communities” 3 ) This article indicates that many kids growing up with technology have a better sense of understanding themselves. Everyone has access to social media, but children abuse it. Children can find articles, blogs and information regarding current events. This may lead to teachers using technology and social media as a way to teach children about important matters. The source of education the internet provides is outstanding but let's not forget about what really is online and that is sexual predators, pedophiles, hackers, trolls, and thieves. With kids being so gullible…

Most of my generation didn’t have a Myspace or Facebook until about the age thirteen or fourteen. Now parents are creating them for their two or three year olds and allowing them to play games on it with their friends. This one consultant from London, Leisa Reichelt, writes “Can you imagine a Facebook for children in kindergarten, and they never lose touch with those kids for the rest of their lives? What’s that going to do to them?” The problem with this is that the amount of teasing or even bullying could greatly increase much more rapidly. The parents will hand over their tablets and ipads and eventually the very young children actually begin to chat with friends or even random people. On top of this, children as young as four or five are getting cell phones to talk to their parents and few close friends. But where is your five-year-old going that you wouldn’t know about or be with them for? The younger generations are already starting to carry the same issues the older generations have and will become more addicted and run into more problems. When kids are younger, even though they don’t think of it at the time, they make a number of bad choices that usually fades away and doesn’t affect the rest of their lives. With having so much access to technology, though, younger generations will start having drama with other peers sooner and could post something that they will later on end up regretting. Parents aren’t always around to be monitoring what their little ones are doing and therefore have less control of their…

Today, social networking sites make it easy for a person to fall into the trap of being publicly known, being forced into harmful situations, being unproductive, and socially isolated from the real world. There used to be a time when a person would just make phone calls, write letters, or even walk to someone’s house to talk. With the advanced technology in today’s society, all a kid has to do is send a quick message, tweet, or post to a social network and there it is. No need to verbally communicate. The more dependant people are on social media, the less real-world interaction will be a part of the world and that is not the type of world people should be so accustomed to.…
