Social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Online Dating and Twitter, allow people to socialize with friends and family all over the world and they are causing a drastic change in the way people sculpt our society today. These websites have become a part of reality’s everyday tasks, and the numbers of users are only increasing each and every day. The websites allow individuals to create their own personal profiles online to share with the world’s online communities. They have changed the way people treat and communicate with one another, affecting human relationships in society. Firstly, bullying both online and offline is becoming a major issue, especially amongst adolescents. This causes mental health issues such as depression and anxiety and it’s all because of online activities on social networking sites. Finally, people are being lied to by online identity thefts, predators and pedophiles; where in some cases, has had some catastrophic consequences.

Cyber bullying is becoming common in our society as social networking sites become more popular, and the amount of users are increasing. Internet bullying has many fatal consequences and is destroying the relationships individuals have with one another day by day. Children and young adolescents are becoming victimized by other online users on social sites, due to the information and stories that are being posted online. People, who have the intention of targeting and harassing others on these websites, do this as it makes the victim feel like they can’t escape, as the harassment has become open to the public. An example would be posting a photo of someone on a website such as Facebook without their consent; harassing and stating despicable comments on the way they look or of their actions. This then embarrasses them in front of other online users who are able to view their content. Individuals are also finding it more common to be cyber bullied out in the school yard as a result of advanced

    In the past, we and our minors have been familiarized with the issue of bullying at schools, workplaces, and other populated settings. However the calamity has never stopped growing and has spread to an even more adaptable environment, the Internet, specifically social networking sites Surveys by bullyingstatistics.org indicate that over 50% of adolescents have been cyber bullied, 10 to 20% are cyber bullied routinely. The National Crime Prevention Council disclosed that victims of cyber bullying will most often experience a drastic deterioration in academic performance and self-esteem as well as depression and even suicide. Efforts to amend this situation are insufficient and for the most part barren, seeing as only one in ten victims will report being cyber bullied to their parents or guardians, and only roughly 7% of American parents are concerned at all regarding online bullying.
