Social Observation Paper
While traveling to various cities in Ecuador, I learned that social classes influence your neighborhood, appearance, education, and even your last name. However, there is little social mobility. While interviewing Ricardo, he stated that people born in the lowest class will usually remain there for the rest of their lives, giving a sense of superiority to members of the upper class. Although few people state their aversion to the lower class, I witnessed many behavioral indicators that would suggest it. Additionally, the upper class neighborhoods within the suburbs are usually guarded by wrought

In Gregory Mantsios’s article, Class in America he says, "The lower one's class standing, the more difficult it is to secure appropriate housing, the more time is spent on the routine tasks of everyday life, the greater is the percentage of income that goes to pay for food and other basic necessities, and the greater is the likelihood of crime victimization. Class can accurately predict chances for both survival and success. " Mantsios also argues that while most Americans, both rich and poor, are keenly aware of class differences, "Class is not discussed or debated in public because class identity has been stripped from popular culture. The institutions that shape mass culture and define the parameters of public debate have avoided class issues.…

Social class is often judged upon by the following criteria; money, possessions, and ranking. In our society today, so much of our life is focused on social ranking. There are those who actively try to climb the social ladder while there are others simply who seem to be at the highest status. In Westport, it seems that most people are privileged in some way. I’ve grown up being on the soccer team, traveling on vacations to Arizona, the Caribbean, and London, never giving much thought to social class. These activities and gifts are just part of my life. However, over the last few years, I have come to realize that there are people who do not have these privileges. That is when I began noticing different social classes.…

According to Lefrancois, Social cognitive theory is a label for Bandura’s theory, which explains social learning through imitation using the principles of operant conditioning while recognizing the importance of cognitive activities such as imagining, symbolizing and anticipating (Lefrancois, p.386). Bandura’s theory was based on Skinners operant conditioning. If you recall Skinner believed in “free will” Therefore, Skinner believed that we have a mind, but due to the limitations on how to study our ”mind” he studied behavior because it could be seen by observation. Skinner was known for operant conditioning that was based on Thorndike’s “Law of effect”. Skinner and Thorndike believed that if a behavior…

Sarah’s upbringing in such an affluent household meant that she was held to a certain level of standards and is expected to act a specific way according to the way her parents have brought her up. The purpose of this study was to conduct observations, using two different methods, on children, between the ages of 4-5, to understand their emotional behaviors in a social and learning environment as well as determining which method of observation was more reliable. There are different methods of conducting observations, but two main ones include naturalistic observation and experimental observation. A naturalistic observation method is when a researcher studies a person or group in their natural environment or setting; the behavior that is observed is one that occurs in a person’s everyday life. In contrast, an experimental observation method is when a researcher is studying a specific behavior in a laboratory-like environment.…

Firms endeavoring to expand into foreign countries need to evaluate the country through both traditional quantitative means and also through a qualitative socioeconomic perspective. In his book, Borderless Business, Clarence Mann introduced the concept of the Social Process Triangle (SPT) to facilitate analysis of the “underlying dynamics of any society” (2006). According to Mann, those dynamics can be described as the interactions between culture, economy and politics (2006). Culture addresses the influence and dynamics of values on a market, such as religion, philosophy, and social relationships. These aspects of culture drive market preferences; for example, in India, Hinduism influences products in international restaurant chains such as McDonald’s, where beef is not on the menu (Alon & Jaffe, 2013). Similarly, Coca-Cola has rebranded Diet Coke as Coke Light in certain European countries to appeal to the local lingo used to describe low-calorie food and beverages (http://www.coca-colacompany.com/contact-us/faqs). Economy examines the specific industry and factors of production, such as availability of materials, education and skill levels of human resources, infrastructure and distribution channels. Political factors, such as how decisions are made and controlled, show the influence of government on business, and the perceived responsibility of business and/or government to support social needs is addressed (Mann & Goetz, 2006…

There are many different sociological concepts that can be used to apply to one’s personal life experience. The sociological concept that I chose to apply to my personal life is the looking-glass self. The looking-glass self is a term created by Charles Horton Cooley to refer to the process by which our self develops through adopting others’ reactions to us. The key point of the theory is that people form their self-concepts based on how others view them. The idea is that the people around us serve as the “mirrors” that reflect images of ourselves. According to Cooley, this process has three steps. First, we imagine how we appear to another person. Sometimes this imagination is correct, but may also be wrong since it is merely based on our assumptions. Second, we imagine what judgments people make of us based on our appearance. Lastly, we imagine how the person feels about us, based on the judgments made of us. The final result is that we often change our behavior based on how we feel people perceive us.…
