In order to assess whether social policy constructs personal lives this essay will focus on exploring the 'mutual constitution ' of personal lives and social policy with a focus on the social divisions of gender, age and class. Personal narratives and themes of ‘work’ and ‘care’ can be used to assist in evidence and inform discussion. However, theoretical perspectives, such as, Feminism and Marxism, along with Post-structural can also provide a lens through which to explore this relationship between the ‘personal’ and social policy. The aim will be to focus the various concepts and theoretical perspectives mentioned above, to the theme of new mothers and consider how the personal lives of new mothers can mutually consist within social policies at three different levels; state level, service level and individual level. To use these levels will enable a clearer lens on determining the evidence that social policy constructs personal lives. Before this can be discussed fully it may be useful to briefly define these three core concepts; personal, social policy and mutual constitution.…

According to Dunn (1994:330), rationality is a self conscious process of using explicit reasoned arguments to make and defend knowledge claims. The rational model of policy and decision making, although heavily criticized, is the most widely used and/or discussed model. The purpose of this short essay is to explore the reasons. It starts the discussion with the definition of the rational model, and then the rational comprehensive theory, and thereafter the concept of bounded rationality. Just before the conclusion, the paper discusses some criticisms of the rational model.…

Firstly, for the purpose of this essay I shall define ‘reasons’ as verbal justification comprehensible to those other than the decision maker. Moving on to the concept of rationality, I shall begin with the economist’s definition of rationality. As defined by Becker in rational choice theory, and advocated by Friedman and the classical school, an action that is ‘rational’ is one that is motivated solely by self interest. A rational action taken by a group therefore maximizes the self interest of that group, and thus falls under assumptions of utilitarianism. Taking this definition, any agent that justifies his actions as motivated by self-gain is rational. Therefore, giving reasons for your actions, provided they are motivated by self interest, is sufficient to define actions as rational.…
