Social Problems
For over a hundred years, Emile Durkheim a French sociologist, social psychologist and philosopher did not think that education can be the key to change society and put an end to the social sickness that they were having. Instead, he believed “that the only way education can be improved, if society can improved itself.” He claimed that education “is only the image and reflection of society. It imitates and reproduces the latter…it does not create it” (Durkheim, 1897/1951: 372-373). The role of education in America is widely recognized as an instrument of social change. Social change occurs only when human beings need a challenge; this happens when society falls short in meeting the needs of its people and innovated ways offer better opportunity of meeting their needs. According to Robert MacIver a Scottish sociologist suggested that social change happens in reaction to several types in the social and non social environment. Education can teach social change by producing a change in the view and behavior of people. (MacIver, Politics and Society: 57-58) It also can produce a change in guiding the social relationships and by doing so, it can bring social change. When I was in school , I was taught life skills that will help me to be a productive citizens such table etiquette, I was disciplined for negative behavior or show any type of disrespect towards my peers and staff without fear that "it would hinder my mental development" Bible was permitted to be read,Christianity was valued and honored, I was encourage to have more creativity and imagination and to think for myself and not have to worry about meeting standards the government set for me according to the standard test ,. Today’s education does not place much value in conducting a way of life to the students. Early education was a means for unchanging a society that was not being notice of any change, early education was affiliated with religion, Today’s education focus more on teaching knowledge. As an educator, one tends to believe that these institutions have become private institutions. Education now is focusing on the development of technology and science. Education is the key to life, if there is anything that determines what makes or breaks a person it is education. Education is the foundation to life. School teaches how to study, interact with peers and adult in authority, partake in extracurricular activities, teach us how to adjust and adapt to different social situations and prepare for life so we all provide the right kind environment for ourselves and family once we become adults. However, there are some economical an social obstacles that some children will face that will hinder their development that will transpire into the school. Certainly, within last the half century society has change dramatically. The divorce rate has risen in an uncontrollable rate and children are being raised by single parents. Growing up in a single parent’s home will have a negative effect on a child’s emotional state and that can cause low academic performance at school. This does not say that children who have both parents at home will perform better or their emotional needs are met, most families today with both parents have to work and one of the parents may have to work two jobs to make ends meet. Children who belong to certain ethnic groups are earmarked as slow learners compared to their counterparts because they may not be able to grasp the material as fast. One’s learning ability does not determine their ethnic background, but their environment and social factors can affect them because of the lack of resources. Stereotypical bias cause children to have low self and teachers may times contribute to the situation by treating them differently. Gender is another social issue in education with the difference in sex. I notice from experience working as a behavior specialist in the school system for 12 years; boys and girls learn differently. They will sit in the same classroom, receiving the same lesson plan, reading out of the same textbook, still boys and girl learn differently and receive different education. It appears the girls perform at an equal if not at a higher rate than boys during their years, once they graduate they seems to fall behind in the work force Economic issues have an effect on children’s learning. Children, who reside in poor communities, attend public schools, lack resources and the technology. Normally Tier 1 School’s and these are the lowest performance schools. Most of these schools are located in urban districts. This automatically will put them in a disadvantage when they are compared to the children who attend private schools or suburban school districts. With America being a diversified country, we have different cultures attending our school system with English being their second language. This will create an obstacle in communicating. Some teachers struggle with the language barrier which can cause a disadvantage learning curve for these students. In conclusion, there has not been any promise in view for the issue that America is having with education system and as a result, the question about what type of act needs to take place. The conflicting sides are evenly matched and now our great learners are left to put up with the effects of any choices made by elected officials and about the future of their education. These issues will not be resolve until the policy makers that are affiliated with school decision can be work out , nothing can be achieved.

You made a great point when you mentioned that education is significant to one's success in life. This week reading assignment helped me to acquire knowledge about the conflicting functions of education. For instance, “function 1 socialization: assist in learning to be productive member of society through the passing on of culture” (Ballantine & Hammack, 2012, p. 29). For example, students may have “different experiences depending on their gender, social class, racial, or ethnic background” (Ballantine & Hammack, 2012, p. 29). For example, a student who is low income will receive a different type of education than a member of the upper class. I am excited to learn about the dilemmas that are presently faced and what we can do to create…

Education has always been a basic human right, across every society around the world. We have always needed to disseminate information and teach people about different skills in order to perpetuate our societies, as they cannot function if people will never go beyond the basics and specialize. However, it is also because of education that we become more holistic people, taking in new ideas and thinking about them, allowing us to develop ourselves as an individual. This is why education is important in creating informed citizens within our own societies, creating our individual “voice” and instigate change within our societies. James Baldwin’s article “A Talk to Teachers” stresses this, as he discusses that education is important in the…

The theory of practice of teaching and interpreting knowledge, also known as education, is generally percepted in society to be the surest path to achieving success in one's lifetime. Over the centuries, the system of learning has changed jurastically and has presented itself in a number of different ways to a variety of cultures and civilizations. The earliest forms of education date back to pre-history, which is what we refer to as the time before the written word. In that spectrum, teaching and learning was carried out only through sounds and body language; a lot like the interactions we see amongst animals today. We all know that education is of great value, and that's why in recent generations the major problems that have arised have all dealt with who gets to be educated and at what price. Those problems have been resolved and for quite some time now, a free public education has been available in the United States. The new problems are the questions like, "Is it losing quality? , Does the criteria need to be updated?" and "Is it worth the price?" The quality of a public education and the price of post secondary schooling are two issues that our country faces in today's world. If we can solve or so much as improve these conflicts then more people will take their free education for what it's worth and hopefully not have to pay as much for their college degree. Other factors that come into play when measuring how successful you will be in life are, believe it or not, demorgraphics. Your sex, race, and where your from can play a role in how much money you will make in life. These are topics that regularly appear in the modern day debate of education and they are also some of the issues that I will be covering in my paper. I will be thoroughly analyzing education and assessing my own opinions about it.…

Today, education enables us to enlarge our knowledge and open doors for opportunities to the path of having a good future. In the five readings, each written by a different author, there was a lesson learned and something to take away from each one. Reading through the passages by Mann, Moore, Malcolm X, Gatto, Rose, and Anyon, each author contributed his or her point of view on general public education. This topic can be very argumentative depending on the quality of education people receive. Sociological Perspectives

The main sociological perspectives on education fall agreeably into the functional, conflict theory and a symbolic interaction approaches (Ballantine .W & Hammack . M77). Functional hypothesis stresses the purpose that education serves in gratifying a community’s various wants. Conceivably the most imperative function of education is socialization. If kids need to learn the customs, morals, and skills they require to function in culture, then education is a crucial medium for such learning. Schools educate children the three R, on the other hand they also teach several of the society’s customs and morals. In the United States of America, these customs and morals includes respect for authority, loyalty (keep in mind the Pledge of Allegiance?), timekeeping, individuality, and competition. Concerning these last two morals, American students from a tender age participate as individuals over grades and other recompenses. Conflict theory does not contradict most of the functions approach. Nevertheless, it does give a number of them a different angle and talks about a number of ways in which education enable social inequality (Ballantine. W & Hammack. M 81). One instance entails the function of social placement. As the majority schools trail their students as early as in grade school, the students conceded by their instructors to be intelligent are placed in the quicker tracks (particularly in reading and mathematics), whereas the slower students are positioned in the slower trails; in high school, three ordinary tracks are the college trail, vocational trail, and general trail.…

Evolutionary theory: One of the social problems that Philippines has been facing today is corruption. It’s been a major problem of the country since years ago. Corruption is as old as human history. But when was the concept of corruption started? In my opinion, corruption has started when people have organized themselves into groups, and that groups were headed by leaders and those leaders became powerful and began to abuse the authority they have. We, people chose leaders that became corrupted. Government officials became greedy as they started to take what supposed for their countrymen. And corruption has been continuing nowadays. As a citizen who grew up in a corrupt country, I believe that we tolerate a certain amount of corruption from leaders as long as there isn’t too much. As people continues to tolerate it, people stop seeing the point of cooperating to stand that matter. And the corruption remains. It is natural for every state that there is a corrupt official, but then also natural for us to take such actions like strikes or rallies which I believe that are very ineffective. That’s why corruption still continues.…
