As stated by the man in the video, a Human Services degree offers a wide range of opportunities in a variety of settings. Those considering a career in this field have a chance to make a difference in the lives of others while experiencing a sense of personal fulfillment, as well as, aiding people from diverse cultures. The man indicates he is a Christian and Christian’s have a calling to serve people that the world overlooks. Several aspects of this type of degree interest me. One is that I can relate to many situations that others are enduring (to some degree). I guess others would say, I have a soft heart for people that are suffering.…
Reflective practice is something we all carry out every single day, probably without even realising it. We use reflection in many different situations and under many different circumstances, as a way of improving our own skills and abilities for different things, as individuals. Cowan proposed that learners are reflecting in an educational way, “When they analyse or evaluate one or more personal experiences, and attempt to generalise from that thinking” (1999: 18). Reflective practice allows us to look at something we have carried out and allows us to see whether or not we handled the situation properly or whether we would handle it differently if we were giving the opportunity to do it again. By doing this reflecting enables you to see how you have improved in certain areas and pinpoint areas which may need some improvement. It’s basically a way of seeing what you have learnt and perhaps shedding light on what could be done in the future. Moon’s theory runs parallel to this as he says that reflective practice is “a set of abilities and skills, to indicate the taking of a critical stance, an orientation to problem solving or state of mind” (1999:63). Suggesting that reflective practice is directly linked with the thinking you do surrounding something you…
This assignment is a critical reflection on the in-class roleplay demonstration where I played the role of a social worker from the Department of Human Services (DHS) and another batch-mate played the role of Marika, the client. A social worker is bound to have a complete understanding of the objectives and goals of the process of counselling so as to be able to meet the client needs. (Geldard, 1989)…
It is not said that these social services are bad or anything unethical but it is bad when these kids spend long time on these social services and not getting any kind of education or schooling. If they give one or less hour in one day in these things they can of course learn many things from it but their first and foremost thing would absolutely always be studying and getting education on the first priority. The parents are also seemed to be quite arrogant and ignorance type when it comes to taking care of their child. Some those who cannot provide money for their children's school should obviously seek the governmental help to assist them in order to make their children educated in a proper way as it can be done.…
Today was my first day back. Today started out fast pace. I knew that it would though. It seem seems like there is never a break. As soon as I walked in the door, I…
As another example, one of my group member as well share her feelings regarding the challenges she is experiencing at her placement. She mentioned that she asked one of the staff members a question regarding the resources they agency uses to help their client, but the staff’s response left her unsatisfied. When she shared this experience, it sounds to me that the question she asked was too generic and not specific, therefore, I did some clarification just to understand specifically what she wants to learn. I was glad to give her a feedback regarding the question she asked because I am doing my placement at an employment agency too, and I am knowledgeable about the question she asked. First, I explain to her that organizations have policies…
Whilst a deep theoretical analysis of race, gender, class, sexuality and ability is needed to understand the roots and origins of societal issues today, equally important is taking that theory out of the classroom and into action based praxis. As an undergraduate student at Columbia in the fall of 2013, I co-founded the campaign for Columbia to divest from fossil fuels and engaged with youth across the country to build a movement for climate justice. Having no experience in community organizing or campaigns prior to college, I had a steep learning curve when I organized a summer conference with trainings for hundreds of students focusing on how to build an anti-oppressive and inclusive climate justice movement. I have kept the core values of…
The second goal stated that human service students will possess and be able to apply beginning human service skills. My duties were to medicate, feed, and assess them for any complication condition because most of them were completely dependent upon other for total care. There were some of these people that were abused either by their parents or by legal guardians. One of the strategy that was I applied to advocate for these people, I had to keep in touch by their social worker and to make sure these people can have at least one home visit a week. I was in the type of this by communicating to the school principal so these people can have a log when the visit was made, whom they meet with, and the schedule to the next visit. It was not an easy that easy. There was a huge complaint by the school principal that there is enough budget to hire a new social worker or the county may not support it. I had to make a few calls to certain elected officials to explain to them how important it is to this. That can save the county much money because prevention cost less than…
After completing this course, I am looking forward to starting my career path of working with families as a professional social worker. This career field looks like it will be both challenging and rewarding at the same time. I am hoping that my education at Appalachian State University will provide me with most of the skills and training that I will need in order to be an effective advocate and helper for my clients. My goal is to assist families in obtaining the resources that they need the most. I aspire to empower the families that I work with and aid them in discovering ways to manage their difficulties.…
The video recorded practice interview allowed me to understand how I can improve in my social work skills. Being able to present and watch a mock interview allowed me to see my strengths and weaknesses.…
In my internship, I didn’t have a lot of client interaction, and hands-on experience. If I were to rate my experience, I would say 5 out 10. Dr. Lowe promoted us to attend social work workshops and seminars to expose us to different aspects of working within the community. I was assigned to a daycare facility to assist the owner of the daycare with the kids. I met a child who I thought was being physical abuse. I mentioned it to the Dr., and she instructed me to contact the DCFS. I reported the incident, and she knew who the child was because he was a patient of hers. After I made the report, I was upset and needed an explanation of what is the proper procedure for handling such a case with DCFS. She never gave me any feedback on how to handle such a touch case. I…
