Acknowledgements

The successful completion of this project would not have been possible without the help of my Social-Studies instructor Ms. Denise Bascom. Her patience and guidance are greatly appreciated. Secondly, I must make special notice of the few students in each class who so willingly participated in the survey I conducted. Lastly, I would like to thank my friends and family members who had given any insight, source or motivation that was needed for the successful completion of this project.

Dr. Boyce Watkins debates with Michael Eric Dyson on whether or not hip hop artists should be held accountable for their words. Both off these men already know, all of the artist should be held accountable, however if we can put the artist to task to stop making that kind of idiotic music, will we have the power to stop that machine that has rob us blind but still put out recording artists slaves that get plenty but they are selfish and it good and bad to an extent? Dr. Watkins points out, that the fact of us and others being bombarded with these negative images of the young Black Male in the mass media, appears to be taking a heavy toll in terms of the self-image of far too many young Black people and in the way these young people are perceived in the minds of the…

The definition of dystopia is "an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one." The definition of utopia is "an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect." Many dystopian communities are created while trying to make utopian ones. Both The Giver and The Prophet of Yonwood are both dystopian. Just because both of these books are dystopian, it does not mean they're similar, but also doesn’t mean they're completely different.…

The Taino (pronounced Tah-EE-no) were the first "American" Indigenous Peoples encountered by Christopher Columbus and other Europeans in the Caribbean Islands in 1492. The Taino are also the first Indigenous Peoples to be referred to as "Indians" (Indios) in the Western Hemisphere. The traditional territories of the Taino extended throughout the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas, and even the Southern tip of Florida. The word "Taino" means "good people" in their ancient language. A major part of their ancestral lineage comes from South America. These ancestors traveled up the islands of the Lesser Antilles and settled eventually in the islands of the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas. Another part of the ancestral Taino lineage comes from Central America and or Mexico. Taino culture was not entirely homogeneous but some of the most elaborate expressions of the culture was found in the Dominican Republic/Haiti and in Puerto Rico. While Taino people could generally communicate in a common language across the islands, there were some dialect differences. Descendants of these peoples still live throughout the Caribbean and beyond. The Taino were subsistence farmers growing food mainly for their own needs. Tainos in Hispaniola also blocked inland rivers to make artificial fish ponds. Yet, Tainos did not rely on field crops for all their food. The only domestic animal known to Tainos was a small dog which was fattened on maize meal and then eaten as a great delicacy. The simplest Tainos dish was ‘pepper pot’. Tainos feared to eat certain foods like; Mammy Apples which they believed were food for the souls of the dead. The Tainos also did pottery; dugout canoes were made with great skills without the aid of any metal tools. Some Tainos canoes were large enough to carry seventy or eighty people or a tonne of trading goods. The canoes made it possible for the Tainos to carry out some trade in cloth, tools, weapons, furniture, tobacco, certain fruits and…

The use of West Africans as slaves in the West Indies was induced because of the Sugar Revolution in the 18th century. This started because of the decline in the profitability of the tobacco in the West Indies. The West Indian planters could not compete with Virginia tobacco which was cheaper and of better quality. The planters then sought for alternative crop. That crop became sugar cane.…
