I plan to study interpersonal practice as my practice method concentration and mental health as my practice area. My ultimate goal is to work in a crisis setting, specifically with suicidal individuals. Studying interpersonal practice and mental health will help me understand, interact, and better serve suicidal individuals in inpatient and crisis settings. The course Mental Health and Mental Disorders in Adulthood will give me a better understanding of just that. I would like to focus on adults, and most classes I have encountered so far are focused on children, so this course will give me a heightened understanding. Social Work Practice in Mental Health is exactly what I need, so I know how to promote mental health, work with mental illness, and provide treatment services. The field placement work will provide me with the hands-on learning that I will need in my future career. By understanding social work in a broad context, I will develop better communication and understanding skills that will benefit the individual I am directly working with. I have always made sure to present myself as a person who is free of judgment and open to understanding. Despite not having a lot of diversity experience, I welcome any experiences I may have with those who are different than myself. I want to make sure people are making decisions that they believe are best for them, and not just because I tell them to. Everyone needs to feel the ability to change and make decisions for themselves, even with professional guidance. I want to better the lives of not only the individual I’m working with but in society as a whole, especially societies that are discriminated against for whatever reason. I believe in harmony, and changing conflicts into resolutions. Finding a middle ground that all sides can comfortably agree on is the key to
