There has been a tremendous change in East Harlem between class warfare and gentrification. East Harlem is one more economic factor to the city’s wealth per capita since the attack of September 11, 2000. It is Manhattan’s last remaining development and it is on the agenda of the tax revenue of our government. East Harlem has become a profit driven capitalism. Gentrification enforces capitalism, it does not separate people, it does not go against race, poor and the working class, it wages war on the poor and the working-class.…

According to Healy (2012, p16), “intervention is where the social worker is involved in achieving identified change goals.” This description of intervention by social workers can be argued by those who promote social justice as quite accurate. The process of how social workers choose to intervene is guided by both theory and practical application of methods and skills, as well as by the needs and requirements of the family and child. Social workers work are not only guided by their professional practice, but are also influenced by government policies, guidance and legislation that create an institutional context to social work practice.…

Intro: Imagine living in the time where Jim Crow laws were at its peak. Just think, not being able to hold the door open for a lady who has hand full of groceries or even communicating with the opposite race. Imagine being a 14 year-old black male at this time. For those of you who don’t know what it’s like to be black in those days, it was pretty tough. I’m not here to speak to you about Jim Crow and its stupidity, but more a young man whose life was completely changed after what was a visit to his uncle’s house for a summer vacation.…

The Harlem Renaissance was a time in which African Americans had an intellectual and inventive movement that thrived with the twentieth century. The Harlem renaissance contribution was based on the influential events of the “New Negro Movement” extended throughout the world. After the Civil War, a great number of people migrated to urban areas. Areas like these were such as Chicago or in New York City. This is where a different way of life developed for African Americans. (Fiero, pages 100-101).…

The relevance of this struggle is significant to future work as a social worker. According to Cox (2008), there is a rise of inequality throughout America. As seen in the videos, it is important as social workers to understand and acknowledge the effects of mountaintop removal throughout Appalachia. This struggle results in implications and urgency for all individuals, especially those in the Appalachian, rural, and small town environments. Innovation has an important role in the inclusion of social policies (Pennsylvania municipalities, n.d.). According to NASW (2008), one of a social worker’s responsibilities is to enhance the well-being of all individuals. In other words, social workers improve the quality of life of individuals through research, policy, and direct practice.…

Painter Aaron Douglas, the "father" of African Art, stated in 1925, "Let 's bare our arms and plunge them deep through laughter, through pain, through sorrow, through hope, through disappointment, into the very depths of the souls of our people and drag forth material crude, rough, neglected. Then let 's sing it, dance it, write it, paint it" ("Harlem Renaissance" 1, par. 4). These words of triumph and strife epitomize the state of living during the Harlem Renaissance in the United States. Liberation, cultural pride, and expression in the arts embodied this period in American history. Beginning at the end of World War I and continuing on until the brink of the Great Depression of the 1930 's, feelings of both acceptance and segregation contrived discord between blacks and whites living among one another. Effecting black Americans as well as America in general, this movement had a profound impact on our country that to this day is apparent in everyday life.…

Malignant Malalignment, or as it is more casually known, Miserable Malalignment, is a leg condition that causes the bones to twist as they grow. When I was 12, I was diagnosed with this condition, and at the time my doctors recommended that I wait to see if I might outgrow this ailment. Sadly, it worsened and this summer I had reconstructive leg surgery to correct the problem. Not only did the surgery immobilize me for what could have been an exciting and fun summer, it also posed challenges for the start of the school year. I wasn’t sure how I would manage to get around campus while my bones were still healing. I contacted UAB’s Disability Support Services (DSS) and set up an Intake Interview and an Accommodations Conference. It seemed weird to be considered “disabled” after so many years of just being a normal kid. I also feel bad being categorized as disabled because it is only a temporary thing for me; once my bones heal I’ll be back to normal.…

In the 19th century, the U.S. was faced with a spate of immigrants (Ehrenreich, 2014). In fact, immigration patterns in the early 19th century included high levels of immigration from across the world, while legislation by the late 19th century limited immigration from many parts of world and encouraged immigration from Europe. Meanwhile, land was abundant in the early 19th century, leading to relatively high wages and a labor shortage. Yet, by the turn of the 20th century, industrialization had decreased the need for labor in agricultural sectors, while unions began to become popular, indicating a trend away from labor shortage and towards poor working conditions and poverty for many…
