Social Work Personal Statement
I would like to study Social work at a degree level as it has been of great interest and personal significance. Having gained valuable work experience in social work I'm very keen to learn more about it and expand my skill set.

I have always wanted to make a difference to people's lives, children in particular. I believe social work will enable me to do just that in a more caring and supportive way. When I was growing up, I watched as my best friend was ill-treated by her step mother. The whole community watched along and no one dared to save her. All she wanted was to be loved, cared for, listened to and someone to advise her on what to do or counsel her. Even though help came, it was a little too late as she had suffered a great deal and

In the meantime I intend to increase my knowledge and skills in Social work by reading books available and by also taking short courses that might prove essential to the course such as an Online Child counselling

Distance education has become one of the more prominent forms of study due to the ever-changing technology offered to this modern era of students; Technology has thoroughly improved academic success. Distance education has a glorious history that can be traced back to its roots in the early 1840’s. “It was Sir Issac Pitman, the English inventor of shorthand, who in 1840 devised his concept to offer education courses by mail, who, in a historical sense, ushered in the first phase of distance education (Matthews, 1999).” Since scholars have been implementing this form of study it has gone by various monikers such as: postal correspondence courses, independent study, off campus study, outreach education, and mostly recently online education. The one concept that all of these various names have in common are that the student is able to conduct studies over a distance. The technology has come a long way to allow these various forms, from simply mailing books and coursework in its induction, to audio classes and instructional videos in the mid 1900’s, and finally to online coursework in the post millennium.…

I have been all over the place with trying to figure out what specific type of social work I would enjoy doing, or where my experiences would serve a greater good. Being able to narrow it down this semester and actually go to a site and experience first hand the tasks I will be doing will make me grow not only as a social work student but also as a person. With this course I am looking forward to bringing back my experiences and what I’ve learned to the class and everyone discussing what they experienced. I think this will help me not only in what I will currently be doing but also any future endeavors. This course will push me out of my comfort zone and take what I have been learning and apply it to the field. The challenges I think that I will face will be the ability of leaving my emotions at the door and becoming impartial to clients situations. I also think it will be challenging to work with children. It is one thing to read a case study in a book, but to actually see a situation first hand and experience it will be challenging. To overcome these challenges I plan on stepping out of my comfort zone and reaching out for how others at the site deal with these challenges. I also plan on seeking out help from fellow classmates to see how they overcome similar…

Pursuing a Social Work Education Upon entering college, my focus was strictly psychology. I loved getting to understand individuals, as well as how a person’s thought could influence their lives. However, being a social welfare minor I came to understand that there are other impeding factors that can influence how an individual functions, lives, and even their development; one huge one being social factors. Social factors are things that influence the way a person lives. The more I came to learn about these social factors and how they affect individuals, the more I became intrigued by social work.…

My enthusiasm in social work began during high school. At my high school, all seniors were required to complete what was called a “Quest Project”. The purpose of the benchmark project was to focus on a social issue that affected the community, find research on the social issue, and find any possible solutions to the issue. Given that my social issue was focused on social anxiety disorder in children and adolescents, I had worked with a school counselor, who was also a marriage and family therapist at my former junior high school. With his expertise in family therapy and educational psychology, I was able to acquire vital information for my project. My time working with my consultant allowed me to expand my knowledge on theories and methods of problem-solving needed to understand my topic as well as conduct my own research to obtain the appropriate skills needed to address my project.…
