Social Work Personal Statement Essay
Growing up in Nigeria I was surrounded by impoverished communities, disadvantaged children and government policies that did not consider children and families’ best interests; rather, they were oppressive in nature. There was a lack of resources for families to avail of, and an overall lack of knowledge surrounding child development and best practices when working with children. From an early age I was aware of the extreme inequalities that were imbedded into my society and how disempowered and helpless people felt. People with mental health issues are stigmatized and judged, children are powerless, and the government does not help people living in extreme poverty. It was from an early point in my life when I decided that I wanted to make …show more content…

I believe completing a Masters of Social Work degree is the avenue which will equip me with the most skills and knowledge to help encourage and facilitate positive changes within systems and …show more content…

My area of interest for specialization is in clinical social work practice, specifically child protection. I am interested in areas such as attachment theory, narrative therapy, and strengths based prospective. My passion is to better the lives of children and families. As someone who came from a different culture, I have multiple lenses to view a certain issue. Even after studying abroad, I regularly discuss politics and social issues with my father, which gives me the balance between a developed country’s perspective and a developing one. Volunteering at different positions and taking on different responsibilities have taught me how to communicate with diverse groups of people and how to be flexible. I also become more open-minded and accepting of others and their differences thanks to my experience working with diversity and living in different cultures. Working in a fast food restaurant teaches me other skills that are applicable to the social work profession, such as having clear communication, regulating my emotions, dealing with stress and work effectively in group setting.…
