Family System in Social Work Practice
The steps in the GIM practice skills involves understanding the entire family system; the amount of data involve to the organization of information; and understand the potential meanings of the information.Moreover, in the GIM practice, there are two useful tools for generating information such as eco-map and genogram. Eco-map tools will provide the graphic nature of the family ecological system that includes family membership and relationships. Whereas geno-grams can be used to monitor or evaluate family changes over time (Hartman, 1978).
In family systems in social work practice, my selection is a family with differences in race or ethnicity. In the social work profession, working with a family with a difference in race or ethnicity requires a social worker to understand dimensions of cross-cultural awareness of generalist practice. Besides that, a social worker need to increase knowledge and skills based on understanding of cultural patterns. Furthermore, the skills to understand the applicable of core values of social work practice with all cultures such as enabling clients to take control over their lives and environment, warmth, genuineness and skills to empower the clients and to initiate their rights. Social worker should implement generalist skill practice on social work to enhance self-awareness and development of knowledge regarding cultural heritage, cultural background on work with clients.
