An advocate strives to obtain resources, work to modify existing policies or practices, and promote new policies that will have an effect on the client. Many social workers work with clients who are mentally impaired, and or physically impaired that sometimes cannot speak for themselves. Social workers are committed to defending, and speaking out for clients. For example, a 50 year old male is a dialysis patient because of renal failure due to the fact that he is a severe alcoholic and is unable to speak for himself. The social worker is responsible for advocating for the client to receive a new kidney. Many doctors are not quick to give these particular patients a transplant because they may regress back to an alcoholic. It is the social worker’s job to speak up for the patients in order for him to receive a transplant. Also, for example a client is denied TANF; which is a housing accommodation for low income families that he or she is entitled. The social worker is able to advocate with the state public welfare income support organization that supervises the TANF services.
