Society And Class In Happy Days By Fonz

Society and class was a major part of the 50s. In the show Happy Days we see that everybody was friends especially the Fonz and the others. This wouldn’t have been the case in real life since the Fonz would have been a “greaser” and the “socials” do not enjoy greasers since they were considered white trash. It also showed the women happier than what they actually were. Women finally had jobs since the men were away at war, and then that all changed once the men came home and got the jobs back. Women then were encouraged to stay at home and bear and raise the children, especially by advice books and articles. This dissatisfaction eventually lead the feminist movement in the 1960s. There was also almost no idea of racism in Happy Days until the
Fonz met Sticks and single handedly beat segregation within the same episode. This was not the case since there were many instances where riots and court cases dealing with segregation had made it to mainstream headlines. Segregation held an entire race back and made life stressful for them so it was a much more pressing issue than what Happy Days showed it as. It took many years to end segregation especially with how the white south acted towards it. It took the Supreme Court to come to a decision within the 1954 case Brown vs. Board of Education. This case was important because it is when the Supreme Court decided that racially segregated schools were unfair. Southern Whites then pulled their children out of public schools and placed them into all white “segregation academies.” In 1956, 128 senators and congressmen signed and released a decree titled “The Declaration of Constitutional Principles,” in this they vowed to “bring about a reversal” of the Brown decision. Despite all these efforts a new movement was formed after Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955.
