Society and Culture – Continuity and Change
Question 2: Identify what the episodes reveal about continuity and change in Australian society in relation to the concepts power, authority, gender, and technology.
Power: In episode 5892 we view the concept of Power in Australian society when Lea fires Chris from working at her restaurant once he becomes overpowering and bossy. Chris lingers around to tell Lea how to run her business, making Lea annoyed as she doesn’t appreciate his behavior and kicks him out. This causes much conflict and results in an argument. In this scene we see the continuity in a Australian workplace where management have the power within the environment to control what decisions are made and what actions take place, for example hiring and firing a employee. The Australian workplace has had a minimal change in regards to male and female roles; there has been a minor rise in female business owners, in reference to Lea. For example in 1994-95 there were only 33% of women owned businesses compared to 2011’s 34%. …show more content…
These
Authority: In episode 5889 we learn about the character Maddy who is experiencing a troubling situation with her boyfriend.
In one particular scene, we see her confessing to her mother Roo, that she had sexual relations with her boyfriend and asks if she is mad that their relationship has developed into an intimate relationship. This conveys the concept of Authority as we see Maddy become vulnerable, self-conscious about her actions, her mothers reactions and opinions to this situation. Parents continuing to have authority over their children by setting boundaries and rules in which their children are expected to comply by can reflect continuity in Australian culture. An example of parental authority is parents advising their children on abstinence until the legal age or even marriage. Children and young adolescence are changing their views on such topics as sex and alcohol by engaging in these activities leaving their parents with barely any authority by
rebelling.
Gender: Gender is conveyed in episode 5890 where the differing opinions of men and women about relationships and sexual interaction are displayed. We see Marilyn telling Sasha how powerful kisses can be and that they are meaningful and deep. However, in contrast to this we see how John is telling Spencer that kisses really do not mean anything and are as “intimate as handshakes.” Throughout time the media e.g. (Home and away) emphasize how women have certain expectations when it comes to romance and how they perceive small romantic gestures like kisses into something immense and personal. Whilst men are perceived to be less emotional and don’t see the bigger picture in the small gestures they may give off. Through observing the changing behaviors of some Australian male adolescence, I have noticed that when they (teenage boys) meet a girl e.g. at a party with alcohol, most end up participating in a form of sexual activities with a random girl with no feelings for her just wanting a “quick fix” leaving the girl usually heart broken.
Technology: Dr. Nate Cooper uses ultrasounds and hospital technology to check on Ricky’s baby. Hospital technology is a recurring prop, which conveys the availability in Australia for health care, advanced medicine and technology. (Continuity is that technology is constantly advancing. Change is modern medicine is reliant on technology and that technology is constantly changing.
