Durkheim was the first to study the social causes, or facts that he believed led to suicide, and these social facts are what shape humans’ behaviour and are external to the individual. He did recognise that some were naturally predisposed to committing suicide, but he argue that it was largely a social problem. However, many interpretevists contest Durkheim’s findings, arguing that the meaning needs to be investigated to find the causes of a suicide rather than a positivist approach, relying on scientific methods.…

As proved in Emile Durkheim’s sociological research project, Suicide, people who end their lives tend to be categorized in three types of suicides: egoistic, altruistic, and anomic (Zulke 19). Egoistic suicide relates to individuals who feel they are isolated from society and detached from others, inevitably leading one to believe that suicide is the appropriate solution to avoid becoming a burden. Alternatively, however, altruistic suicide correlates with people who view their life as less valuable than those belonging in a group and are willing to sacrifice their lives for the benefit of others. Dissimilar to the idea of egoistic and altruistic suicide pertaining to an individual’s extent of social integration within society, anomic suicide pertains to those who feel they lack normalness in their lives when society experiences drastic changes. Individuals who usually feel fulfilled with their day-to-day behavior but encounter a sense of emptiness and meaninglessness in their goals demonstrate a lose in motivation to want to keep living.…
Maladaptive thoughts, which might have led to increased stress for this student include the extent of problems. Looking at a health perspective, this student could be having anxiety, which will bring on shortness of breath rapid heart rates. This student is increasing stress while talking him or her into a heart attack. Looking at the diet, he or she may put more stress on themselves by not going to the gym and giving into the fast food. Thoughts could be “why change, it will be the same”. Maladaptive thoughts can harm a person. Reading into the negatives will lead to acting in negative ways.…
Durkheim, a positivist sociologist, argued that society is based on social facts which need to be observed and tested scientifically (Giddens. 1986). Through his empirical study on suicide, Durkheim concluded that although suicide was a solitary act, it was a social fact triggered by causes of society. He found that too less or too much of integration and regulation can be a problem, Protestants had higher suicide rates as opposed to Catholics - Durkheim established a link between egoistic and anomic suicide…
Stress is the response that occurs when we think the demands being placed on us are greater than our ability to cope. Stress, if left unresolved, could lead to serious health problems. People believe that life changes are linked to stress and illness. Life changes are major events that occur in an individual’s lifetime such as death of a loved one, pregnancy, divorce or redundancy. In addition to events that happen in a person’s life, stress can also be a result of something that doesn’t happen. For example, not being promoted or not getting into university are extremely stressful life ‘not-changes’ for several people. Psychological research has provided evidence to support the view that stress can be caused by life changes.…
In 1919 World War I had come to an end. Ten years later the stock market crashed throwing the United States into a Great Depression. The time period in between was a time that was classified by a boom in the economy and prohibition legalized by the eighteenth amendment. In that time span of these two prominent moments in American history was one of the most scandalous presidencies in American history. It came from no other than Ohioan Warren G. Harding.…

Recovery following an acquired brain injury is a stressful life event. In general, stress can be created in many different ways, whether as a reaction to a specific issue, the result of chronic problems, or an injury. The affected individual must overcome deficits, adapt and re-learn many skills that were not compromised prior to the brain injury along with the changing dynamics of previous relationships. The process of adjustment to acquired brain injury is often divided into a biomedical process and a psychosocial adaptation process, with psychosocial or emotional pathway being how a person perceives their circumstance and overcomes it (Brands, Wade, Stapert, Van Heugten,…
Durkheim focused much of his studies on the social factors that contribute to suicide. During his studies of religious, economical, and tight knit social structures, he discovered 4 types of suicide. The third type is called Anomic Suicide. This type of suicide involves a rapid change in one’s social status from one that is highly regulated by the individual to one that is lacking any innovation or too overwhelming. Anomic Suicide can also be thought of as a disruption of social balance. During their regular status they lived a life that was fluid. A rapid change from this can leave the individual with a lack of purpose or in a state confusion or stress. Durkheim believed that for whatever reason these individuals lack the ability to conform…
Living in one of the most crowded places, you would expect the suicide rates to be higher in New York City as opposed to other cities in the world. New York City has an astounding rate of 8% suicide rate per 100,000 people. Then there is Las Vegas with a surprising 34.5% suicide rate. Shouldn’t New York City, one of the most stressful cities to live in have a higher suicide rate? But why doesn’t it, you may ask? Emile Durkheim, a Functionalist has expressed his thoughts within his book, Suicide. He refers to social integration vs detachment as one of the main causes of suicide. Durkheim also expresses his opinions on social bonds and why we need them to function in life. One of the main causes of suicide is isolation. This proves that social bonds and isolation have a connection to suicide.…
