THE STUDY OF CULTURE

what is culture ; the latin word is CULTURA which means CARE or CULTUS “ civilization”

TYPES of CULTURE

*MATERIAL CULTURE – icludes a physical objects or artifacts .
*NON-MATERIAL -aspetcs of culture is the meaning and substance inherent in culture .

COMPONENTS OF CULTURE

norms – are often to described as social . These are guides or model . Folkways- they are repitetive or typical habits folkways is the customary ways . Mores -as a consequence , violations of mores result in disaprovable and even severe punishment . Laws- decleration of human rights . Values- represent the standards we use to evaluate the desiralibilty of things . Languange – it refers to a system symbol ,have a specific and arbitrary meaning in a given society . Fashion ,fads ,crazes – they are more short lived social norms w/ which people are expected to comply with.

ADAPTATION adaptation is its being ADAPTIVE . *DIFFUSION – common process of patterns and traits FISSION – trace historically when long -established society breaks up into two or more . Independents units . PARALLELISM- development od culture characterestics and two widely separated cultures .
MODES O ACQUIRING CULTURE

*imitation -imitates even the undesirable traits from his peer group . *indoctrination- formal teaching . conditioning -the individual acquires a certain pattern of beliefs, values,behavior amnd action .

CULTURAL VARAIABILTY

*ETHNOCENTRISM – this is a universal phenomenon . CULTURABILITY - moral standards of rights and wrong and good and bad for evaluating cultural phenomena . “OTHER CONCEPTS CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE “ CULTURE SHOCK – experience by migrants or even by professionals. CULTURAL LAG – this is meant to the dysfunction in . CULTURAL DUALISM- onething that characterized filipino culture
