INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY August 3, 11

Paul Arjean Ramos

TOPIC NO. 1

EXPLAIN HOW YOU DEVELOPED AN APPRECIATION AND UNDERSTANDING FOR THE FIELD OF SOCIOLOGY AND DISCUSS THE FOUNDATIONS OF SOCIOLOGY, AS THEY RELATE TO YOUR CULTURE AND STYLE OF LIVING.

INTRODUCTION

Well sociology for me at first sounded interesting because I have not studied sociology before and it is a new thing for me. The thing I’m most interested in sociology is the study of different cultures relating to my own culture. Sociology has helped me a lot in understanding many things about culture and norms of different society. At first I was hesitant because from what I know American culture is very bad but as soon as I understand more of it I have found a new appreciation for it and also my international classmates help me understand their culture as well. Adapting and learning from others for me is very significant in relation to sociology. Because if you narrow your mind that the only culture that is best is your culture then you will be wrong about it because for me different cultures has a negative and positive side to it so by understanding it from other point of view is good for me. The culture that I was brought up with has something in common with American culture. But still not everything is similar to American culture and I believe that my culture is more conservative than the American culture.

FINDINGS

Now I have a full appreciation with sociology and I am interested in studying it more in depth. I am just fascinated with how different people act according to the culture that they have been brought up. As I look back to my own culture, I understand that through the study of these things I further understand why there are some individuals who act differently even though we have the same culture, the factor that is affecting these is how do they interact with different individuals through the society. Culture is a very big foundation of sociology, from these

Sociology is the study of the society and the way people interact within it. The field of sociology and trying to study and understand it is very complicating due to the fact that it is such a wide topic. Feelings change along people and nobody can truly explain why people do the things they do. A student attempting suicide out of nowhere is unexplainable or even a random divorce. The unexplainable minds of people and random occurrences really interests me into pursuing this field.…

Sociology in todays world requires you to look at the world critically. Sociology explores many problems of great interest, and its topics are often controversial and conflicted in societies. This means that sociologists have to have a willingness to ask many questions, no matter how difficult. Sociologists also have to be open to any answers that are supported by evidence and reason. Sociological thinking is defined by me as: everything is connected rather than being an one individual’s actions alone. I believe that sociological thinking is an important concept to follow because it allows you to think about how your actions not only affect you, but will how they will effect those around you.Sociological Imagination is defined as: the ability…

Sociology is defined as “the scientific study of human society and social interactions” (Tischler, 2013). Anthropology is “the scientific study of the origins of the social, physical, and cultural development of humans” (Tischler, 2013). These two social sciences share many theories and concepts. The difference between these two groups is the study and the research methods they use. Sociologists usually study large, modern and industrial societies. They tend to utilize research methods that allow them quickly gather specific information about large sample of people within that society. In contrast, cultural anthropologists immerse themselves in another society for a prolonged period of time. By doing so, they try to learn as much as possible about that society and the relationships within it. Cultural anthropologists “tend to focus on the culture of small, preindustrial societies because they are less complex and more manageable using this method of study” (Tischler, 2013).…
