Forest Gump

Despite his low IQ, Forrest Gump leads a truly charmed life, taking part in many of the most memorable events in his lifetime. Without trying, Forrest teaches Elvis Presley to dance, becomes a football star, meets John F. Kennedy, serves with honor in Vietnam, meets Lyndon Johnson, speaks at an anti-war rally at the Washington Monument, hangs out with the Yippies, defeats the Chinese national team in table tennis, meets Richard Nixon, discovers the break-in at the Watergate, opens a profitable shrimping business, becomes an original investor in Apple Computers, and decides to run back and forth across the country for several years. Meanwhile, as his life goes by, Forrest never forgets about Jenny, the girl he loved since a boy. Jenny makes her own journey through the 1960s and 1970s in a far more troubled way than Forrest did. Towards the end, he finds out that Jenny had their child and is struggling to make ends meet, Forrest takes care of Jenny and little Forrest until her death and after. Elliott 2 Forrest Gump was from a small, tight knit town called Greenbow, Alabama where everyone knew everyone. People of the south, especially in Alabama can be considered their own social group. A social group is a collection of people who share some social relation and common identity. These people regularly interact with each other and expect one another to conform to certain ways of thinking and acting. People of the south tend to have different cultural differences than people of the north and can identify with one another with in their boundaries. The people of slow paced Greenbow are not used to any kind of change or someone who is considered different than the norm. For example, in this movie Forrest, along with many of the people he interacts with have a southern accent and use slang that is used mainly in his social group. People of the south are known for saying things like y’all, or phrases like “ugly as homemade sin”. This group of people

From teaching Elvis his latest dance move, to scoring touchdowns for Bear Bryant at Alabama, Forrest Gump jets all over the 20th-century! Our friend Forrest, whom Tom Hanks plays, got the opportunity to meet three different presidents for various admirable reasons. After becoming an All American football player at the University of Alabama, Forrest met President Kennedy. For a heroic act whilst in the heat of combat in the Vietnam War, Gump met President Johnson and received the Medal of Honor. Being wounded in the “buttocks” in Vietnam, Gump picked up the sport of ping pong while recovering in the hospital. Forrest was good enough to get on the U.S. ping pong team, which lead him to meet President Nixon. Prior to meeting President Nixon, Gump was unknowingly responsible for tipping off authorities to discover the Water Gate scandal. Forrest was invited to the ‘Captain Kangaroo’ television show where he sat with John Lennon and discussed the war. If at all familiar with John Lennon's work you're quickly clued in to the fact that Lennon's responses to Gump's statements are quotes from his song “Imagine”. Also, in the first few minutes of this film Forrest explains how he is named after the great Civil War hero General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who he claims started the Ku Klux Klan. Forrest obviously is unclear on what the KKK is all about because he talks about them dressing up in bedsheets and…

    > The sociological perspective is described as seeing the general in the particular. In this essay I will attempt to apply the sociological perspective to analyze song lyrics from the first verse of the song My Block by Tupac Shakur (see appendix for lyrics). Tupac (1971-1996) is the most famous gangster rap artist of all times. He was well known for his lyrics and their ability to express the grief of the Black community. He was an advocate for Black rights and very much against the societal system and class societies. Many say he exaggerated the conditions under which the Black community and the lower class were in because he was a wealthy man rapping about suppression. To other’s he was part of the petite-bourgeoisie, but he was consistent in attempting to better the conditions under which the lower class were in.…

My paper titled toys and gender, is based on the toys of today and how they relate to gender socialization. I decided to go to the local Wal-Mart in Cookeville, Tn. I chose this store because it is a worldwide known large retail store. I concluded that it would be a good store to analyze because it is thought of as a family store where many families go to shop. Therefore, I knew that there would be a wide variety of toys to analyze and collect data. I went to Wal-Mart December the 3rd. I analyzed the toy sections of Wal-Mart and how the toys are associated with gender, color sound, types of play they encourage, types of interactions they cause, and what they prepare children for. With the exception of preschool toys that were sometimes offered in gender-neutral packaging, kids’ toys were largely segregated into different aisles according to gender. And within those aisles, the markings of gender were clear. The “girls’” section resembled the aftermath of an explosion of Pepto-Bismol. In the “boys’” section, there seemed to be a profusion of aggressive, hyper-muscled, weapon-wielding action figures. And in both realms, the majority of toys seemed to be explicitly tied to movies and television…

For the sake of national unity, Prime Minister of Canada Mackenzie King of 1935- 1948 did not want to repeat mistakes that had occurred in the past (Quinlan, 50). As World War 1 unfolded Mackenzie King was forced to change his views on conscription (Quinlan, 50). Canada’s military had let in new troops and prepared them for war, during this time they believed conscription would not be necessary (Nelson, 42). The first military conscription divided the country (The diary of William Lyon Mackenzie King). On September 3rd, 1939, Britain and France declared war on Germany following the invasion of Poland by German troops. Mackenzie King held a special seating of Parliament with a vote directly following the debate in the House of Commons; a referendum was the elite alternative to his dilemma. “Are you in favour of releasing the government from any obligations raising men for military service?” this was what Mackenzie King had come up with. After the vote, 82.3 percent of voters, voted yes in Ontario, In British Columbia 79.49 percent vote yes. In Quebec 72.4 voters said “Non” (Quinlan, 50). This was when Mackenzie King found himself in the same position as Borden during the World War 1. Mackenzie was forced to decide between French and English voters. Firstly, for the first time being, Mackenzie King did not enforce conscription, “Not necessarily conscription, but conscription if necessary.” (Quinlan, 51). Furthermore, Mackenzie King had just made his first general tough decision that did not initialize conscription just yet but had to send men to war under the NRMA draft. Lastly, there was an election and Mackenzie made promises that he could not keep. This tells us a lot about Mackenzie and his contribution to the war.…

I’ve always doubting my writing, I felt as though my form of writing and word arrangement made it difficult for the reader to understand what I was attempting to say. Throughout this summer semester, I’ve learned a great deal about myself in this course. Honestly, if I were to give myself a grade I’m not entirely sure what I would grade myself. I’ve improved in my writing styles and I learned to look at things more clearly to strengthen my writing; grades are subjective due to this I am unsure of how to properly grade myself.…

In 2010 the Acme Widget, United States factory, outsourced 80% of the Anytown population due the fact that unionized workers could not operate the factory’s old equipment. The owners, part of the capitalist class, decided to close the factory after forty years of operation. They moved the factory to the foreign country of Mexico in order to obtain cheap labor and no benefits for new prospective workers. In doing so, the company would be able to save more money by not changing to new equipment and paying new workers less money. As a result, workers back home in the USA were left with no jobs for the next two to five years. The workers of Anytown were forced to live out their unemployment funds, savings and welfare benefits as a main source of income.…
