Personal Health Essay
I believe that my current health is at its highest peak. At some point we all wish or imagine our best “ self “. This is important for us for numerous reasons. Some reasons include personal goals happiness feeling healthy making others happy. I am 24 years old. I have been working out for about 4 years and also dieting correctly. This is important to me because I want to be the best me and also it something that I enjoy very much. My family health history seems to be in good line. from the mothers side has have diabetes. It was been hard on her in these her older years. From that same side of the family my mothers sister struggles with some mental issues. I am not sure what the diagnosis is but I know it has been tough on my whole family. For myself my health seems to be pretty good. I am also very lucky that I get health insurance. Having health insurance is a key in the society we live in. I have friends that do not even consider going to the doctor because they cant afford the bill and do not have insurance. I think the health system is a mess and effects so many people.
I follow many physical and mental health habits.
Starts with what I drink. Yes! I only drink water. People would be surprise how much sugar is in most drinks and how much healthier you are with just water. Please stay alway from sugar. My favorite is the gym, for many reasons not only physical but mental. The gym relieves all the bad stress I carry around. Fitness is very important. The gym so puts you in great physical shape. If you commit, you will change your live for ever. It is important to have habits to improve your physical and mental …show more content…
health.
I believe that has I age I will try to stay active. According to Activity Theory, “the best way to age and to cope with difficulties that may arise from aging is to stay active, both mentally and physically. According to activity theorists, life satisfaction and a healthy self-concept depend upon maintaining roles or gaining new roles if old ones are lost. For example a person may lose her role as an employee and worker when she retires, but she may replace that role with the role of being a volunteer. Researchers who developed this theory explained "the greater activity, the greater one's life satisfaction" (Lemon, Bengtson, and Peterson, 1972 Lecture). I think this should be the theory I follow has I age. This theory reminders me of a old friend as I wrote in the class discussions. I think he has aged well and looks healthy and happy.
As I age I am aware that my teeth could change.
This is something I very concerned about as I know older people With teeth problems. As I read in lecture “Tooth and Gum Issues. About 25 percent of adults 60 years old and older no longer have any natural teeth. Interestingly, toothlessness varies greatly by state. Roughly 42 percent of Americans over age 65 living in West Virginia are toothless, compared to only 13 percent of those living in California.”
“Having missing teeth can affect nutrition, since people without teeth often prefer soft, easily chewed foods. Because dentures are not as efficient for chewing food as natural teeth, denture wearers also may choose soft foods and avoid fresh fruits and vegetables.”(lecture) I constantly go to the dentist to check up. I will do everything in my control to perfect my teeth. As learned though out class as we age lots of things will change. Teeth to me are a big one. Due to the fact of low income my grandmother has had a lot of teeth problem. She lived in Dominican Republic with not much of dental insurance much of her adult life. Luckily in her later years she moved to the United States where she received better insurance. This is why the care for my teeth as I age and maintaining proper insurance is a key for me. Another thing I came across on week 6 lecture: “The immune system is a complex group of organs, cells and molecules distributed throughout your body, responsible for protecting your body from harmful invaders such as
germs, viruses and other foreign substances. Specialized white blood cells that play a major part in your body's immune response gather in your lymph nodes and other parts of your immune system”(week 6). Since your immune is protects your body from gems I thought it should be something for me to be aware of. I know that with aging this is something that will also change. I will seek doctors for advice as I age. Again insurance will play a huge role in this. The more I write this essay the more emphasis I see in health care.
After reading the sample essay I came across something I wanted to add to my essay because it is dear to my heart.“It is clear that higher educational attainments and social class, more prestigious occupations, and above average income levels contribute to greater longevity.” (Ferrini 37) I could not agree more. I think it is essential to the way we age and how we eat are related to income. After I started eating healthy I have notice how expensive healthy food actually is. I could see how hard it is for a low income person to eat healthy. Being a income student and caring about the way I eat this is something I will have to deal with.
I think it is well known that the healthier you eat the long you may live, isn’t that what we all want? I think this is one of life’s interesting questions. Why don’t we all just execrise and eat better. I can only speak for myself when I say this is something important to me. My specific plan for how to maintain or improve my health will be to continue a strict routine in the gym and eating. I want to have a balance approach to my physical fitness. “As people age, their risk of falling often increases. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one in every three adults age 65 and older falls each year. Falls can cause moderate to severe injuries, such as hip fractures and head injuries, and can increase the risk of death in older people. Fortunately, falls are a public health problem that is largely preventable.
One way to prevent falls is to practice balance exercises as a part of a normal exercise routine. Balance exercises mainly strengthen the muscles in the legs, hips, and ankles, and they can be done along with strength training or separately”. (Lecture week 6) This is the approach I want to take as I age. My grandmother once fell and broke her hip and knee because of seeing this happen to her I want to have that in mind as I age. Right now as 24 year old I exercise more for strength but as I age I want to take the balance approach as stated in week 6 lecture. I think these changes are realistic to me because I am already dedicated to the gym. As I aged I believe the balance fitness could also be a fun change after years of training the same way. I look forward to a new stage of my life with new and exciting fitness routines, nutrition and knowledge about health and aging.
